IN A contrast to the previous day’s action, yesterday’s matches at the Under 19 World Cup produced a pair of narrow results as the Super Sixes stage came to a conclusion.
Australia vs Sri Lanka
The seemingly unconquerable Australians have been conquered, with Sri Lanka pulling off a shock 12-run win to end its tournament on a massive high.
Sri Lanka was initially restricted to just 8/99 from its 20 overs. The Sri Lankans had a strong start to the innings before wickets started to tumble and the scoring slowed significantly.
Lily Bassingthwaighte lead the charge for the Aussie bowlers with a trio of wickets, while Hasrat Gill and Tegan Williamson took two wickets each.
In reply, the Australians were 4/65 with five overs to go, but the Sri Lankan squeeze threw a spanner in the works.
They lost 3/15 in the next four overs to find themselves needing 19 off the final over, but could only score seven of the required runs.
Chamudi Praboda, Pramudi Methsara and Aseni Thalagune lead the charge for the Sri Lankan bowlers, each claiming a pair of wickets.
Australia still moves on to the semi final, but the result is not the ideal preparation for the knockout stage.
Nigeria vs Ireland
Nigeria has finished its debut World Cup tournament on a positive note after defeating Ireland by six runs.
Nigeria was restricted to 7/94 from its 20 overs, before then bowling Ireland out for just 88.
The tournament debutants started off slowly in their innings before building later in the piece, whereas for Ireland it was the opposite.
Lilian Ude led the wicket taking for Nigeria with three wickets, while Peace Usen and Anointed Akhigbe took two wickets each.
Meanwhile for Ireland wicket taking duties were shared pretty evenly, with Kia McCartney the only bowler to take more than one wicket.
