PREVIEW | India vs Ireland – Women’s

A HISTORIC series is about to get underway in the subcontinent, as India host Ireland for the first time in a three match one day series.

For hosts India, it is a chance to give lesser experienced faces a chance to perform on the international stage.

There will be some recognised faces though.

Smriti Mandhana is set to lead the side, with Deepti Sharma as her deputy. Jemimah Rodrigues will also be there, and will no doubt be crucial up the top end of the batting order.

However Harmanpreet Kaur and Renuka Singh Thakur are the two big names who have been rested for this series, but this does give other top order batter and quick bowlers a chance to impress in their absence.

Amongst the younger faces Tanuja Kanwer is someone to keep an eye on. The spinner can be a handy wicket taker but has not had a lot of chances at international level, so will be keen to prove herself this series.

Meanwhile this is arguably an even more important series for the Irish. As an up and coming nation in women’s cricket any chance the Irish can get to play these top teams is huge. They probably would have preferred this to be a T20 series and not an ODI series based on recent form, but they will still take any opportunity they can get.

Gaby Lewis is set to captain her country in this series, with the top order batter looking to both pile on the runs with the bat and take some handy wickets with her spin bowling. She has also been spendy some time playing in Australia in recent months.

Orla Prendergast is set to be Lewis’ deputy for this series, and after her history making series in the most recent WBBL season, may be the most important player in the Irish line up. She too is a handy allrounder.

A couple of other handy players to watch are Una Raymond-Hoey and Laura Delany.

Like her skipper, Raymond-Hoey has also been playing in Australia and has WBBL level experience like Prendergast, and will be looking to pile on the runs at the top of the order.

Ex skipper Delany is a very experienced head in this Irish side, and will be looking to steer the ship through the middle order and can also bowl.

Ireland will also be missing a key name though, with Amy Hunter ruled out of the series through injury.

Joanna Loughran, who only made her international debut about a year ago, will take her place in the squad.

The matches will take place at Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on the 10th, 12th and 15th of January. All matches are set to kick off at 11am local time.
