2022 WAFLW Team of the Week: Round 13

IT was a case of seventh heaven for both East Fremantle and Peel Thunder in this week’s Rookie Me Central West Australian Football League (WAFL) Women’s Team of the Week for Round 13. The Sharks dominated West Perth and Peel Thunder staged the comeback of the season to pick up season-highs of seven players in the round’s team – and an emergency – whilst fellow winner Subiaco (four) was well represented. South Fremantle (four) and Swan Districts (two) still had multiple representatives, whilst West Perth did not have any representatives for Round 13.

East Fremantle has no shortage of lines covered across the board, with representatives in each third of the ground. The midfield was humming in Round 13, and our captain of the Team of the Week is Ashlee Atkins. She had a massive 26 disposals, 11 marks, seven tackles and worked tirelessly to boot three goals in the win over the Falcons. She is joined in the team by fellow midfielders Sharon Wong and Zippy Fish.

The Sharks also had tall forward Julia Teakle and Team of the Week regular Larissa Versaci inside 50 after both slotted three goals. Defender Leanne Gubbins earned a place in the back 50, whilst Georgie Cleaver provides some height and versatility in the team, named on the interchange for Round 13. Remarkably, the Sharks also had one of the three emergencies, with Amber Kinnane unlucky to miss out.

Peel Thunder also had a nice balance across all three lines, highlighted by forward Kate Bartlett‘s seven-goal haul who was our vice-captain for Round 13. She is named at full-forward, with the exciting Aisha Wright at half-forward. Winger Jaide Britton also made the team again after another strong performance, whilst Ebony Dowson and Cassie Davidson were rocks in defence. Youngsters Jorja Haines and Kaitlyn Srhoj also made it into our side.

Subiaco picked up the four representatives for Round 13, with Amy Mulholland and Maggie Maclachlan named inside 50 after strong performances. Captain Tarnica Golisano slotted into the centre after a highly efficient game and Jayme Harken (interchange) rounded out the side.

South Fremantle might have faded away given Bartlett’s heroics, but still managed four players in our Team of the Week. Named at full-back, Casey Byrne is in there alongside rebounder Kiara Templeman, whilst ruck Lauren Wakfer made it in again. She was named starting ruck, whilst three-goal Bulldog Zoe Huggett adds some extra height to the side on the interchange.

Swan Districts had the two representatives this week, with Aimee Ralph starting at centre half-back and talented bottom-ager Jaime Henry named on the interchange bench. The Swans also had an emergency in Emma Nanut. West Perth did not manage a player in the named 24, but defender Jessica Roper was nominated as the third emergency for our team in Round 13.
