SNAPSHOT: “An exciting utility player with endless potential with his athleticism, Alix Tauru’s 2024 season has shown what a bit of luck can do for a player who can get a good run at it after numerous setbacks” – Adrian Dixon

Gippsland Power utility Alix Tauru is very much looking likely he will be the biggest draft riser of the class of 2024. After an injury hit few seasons where many were keen to see what he could produce, the versatile utility has stood up and made all recruiters and draft followers take notice throughout this season with many impactful performances in the Coates Talent League competition.

From the town of Warragul where he turned out for both Warragul Blues and Industrials along with Ellinbank, Tauru first represented the Gippsland Power in 2022 in the Under 15 V-Line Cup tournament as an over-ager. He was named amongst the best in both games and these performances would see him end up winning a spot with the Power for the 2023 season, as a bottom-ager.

However his 2023 season could not have gotten off to a worse start, suffering an ankle injury in a practice match, then dislocating a finger outside of footy. He would manage two games for the Power scoring goals in both games, while also making his senior debut with Warragul Industrials in the West Gippsland Football League where he performed well as a forward. Overall, Tauru missed a total of 14 weeks combined of injury.

While that could have easily seen him give up on his AFL dreams completely, it looked like 2024 was going to be more opportunities lost for Tauru, especially after another injury was suffered playing for the Power in May this year, resulting in a seven-week absence following hip tendonitis. However, once he returned in June and following a standout performance against the Bushrangers he never looked back and it resulted in a call up to the Vic Country side, playing a key defensive role.

Although not as tall as him, Tauru has been likened to West Coast stalwart Nic Naitanui due to his athleticism but he has also been likened to Hawthorn captain James Sicily in terms of his defensive game and aggressive attack on the ball, Sydney captain Dane Rampe due to his ability to rebound out of defence and to another degree, Port Adelaide utility Aliir Aliir due to his versatility.

IMPROVEMENTS

- Decision making
- Durability

Plenty out of Gippsland for many years have raved about Tauru’s potential and why he was worth persisting with. After nasty injuries suffered in both seasons for the Power, his run of form upon returning just showed what can happen when able to stay on the park. While Tauru's ability to hang in there should be admired, it also could leave question marks on how durable he actually is when it comes to getting continuity into his footy. When it comes to being in the elite environment, Tauru obviously will have the resources at hand to give him the best opportunity possible to thrive.

Tauru’s versatility was highlighted when it came to the postseason games in both the Wildcard Round and quarter finals. Against Murray Bushrangers, he played a key role at the same end of the ground all day – when the Power kicked against the wind, he played down back playing a key intercepting role, and when they were with the wind, he went up forward playing as a third tall forward. In the quarter final against Dandenong, he started in defence with the Power kicking against the wind, however played the rest of the game rotating between the midfield and the forwardline, providing a target.

The game that kickstarted Tauru’s season came in Round 11 against the Bushrangers at Port Melbourne. Given the job on the slightly taller Jack Whitlock, Tauru showcased his play reading and intercepting ability peeling off numerous times to dispose of the ball and provide an option once the ball was disposed of. Though his performance that day resulted in a call up to the Vic Country squad, it also did highlight the need for an area of improvement, his decision making which saw him turnover the ball a few times. His intercept marking came to the fore again for Vic Country following a performance where he got the better of top Western Australian prospect Kayle Gerreyn, and it included a screamer.

To add to his versatility, his competitiveness was also shown following the championships in a game against the Eastern Ranges. In a narrow win, Tauru was competitive all day with his contest work especially at ground level against the highly rated Josh Smillie where he went head-to-head with him for much of that day and this proved effective as Gippsland came home with the points.

Recently at the National Draft Combine, Tauru recorded a top score of 94cm for the running vertical jump to further highlight his elite vertical leap. His all-round athleticism is exciting, having also tested well across the board. Each factor lends to his outstanding aerial ability, as he is able to close in on contests throughout four quarters and leap into them with reckless abandon.

DRAFT RANGE: 8-15

SUMMARY:

With his finish to the season and with so much upside, especially after recent results at the draft combine, expect Tauru to be in the frame to secure his place on an AFL list come night one of the draft. For someone who can compete in all three areas of the ground and possesses the traits Tauru has, and given the level of interest across the board from nearly every club, he will be in high demand. However, with the top end talent of this draft being dominated by pure midfielders it could be possible he could either end up in the top 10 or fall just outside it. While the scary thing is that he hasn’t even scratched the surface of his potential yet, the fact is there is no position set for him due to his versatility and ultimately the club that selects him will be doing so based on where he fits into their side and where they see him contributing in two to five seasons time. Come draft night, though, it will be a matter of how far he slips.
