{"id":121642,"date":"2022-12-06T08:24:54","date_gmt":"2022-12-05T22:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/central.rookieme.com\/afl\/?p=121642"},"modified":"2022-12-06T08:24:56","modified_gmt":"2022-12-05T22:24:56","slug":"aflw-season-7-glass-half-full-empty-melbourne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/central.rookieme.com\/afl\/2022\/12\/06\/aflw-season-7-glass-half-full-empty-melbourne\/","title":{"rendered":"AFLW Season 7 Glass Half Full\/Empty: Melbourne"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>IN a new approach to the AFL Women\u2019s end of season reviews, Rookie Me Central casts both a glass half full and half empty lens over each side\u2019s campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s team, the last in the series, is of course Melbourne, who broke through for its first AFLW Premiership in Season 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-glass-half-full\"><strong>GLASS HALF FULL<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They finally broke through for their first flag<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the perennial &#8216;almosts&#8217; for so long, Melbourne finally broke the drought and won its first AFLW Premiership, downing Brisbane by four points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After going so close so many times, you can tell on the faces of the likes of <a data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"29877\" class=\"_dc_spo\" href=\"\/afl\/player\/daisy-pearce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daisy Pearce<\/a>, <a href=\"\/afl\/player\/sarah-lampard\/\" data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"29946\" class=\"_dc_spo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Lampard<\/a> and others how much the win meant to them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The powerhouse midfield quartet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though the Dees have strong assets across the ground, it was a particular group of four midfielders who really became a force to be reckoned with in Season 7. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/central.rookieme.com\/afl\/player\/karen-paxman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Karen Paxman<\/a>, <a data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"30966\" class=\"_dc_spo\" href=\"\/afl\/player\/tyla-hanks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tyla Hanks<\/a>, <a data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"78634\" class=\"_dc_spo\" href=\"\/afl\/player\/eliza-west\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eliza West<\/a> and <a data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"30920\" class=\"_dc_spo\" href=\"\/afl\/player\/olivia-purcell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olivia Purcell<\/a> are all stars in their own right, but combined really well in Season 7 to create a truly damaging combination that was at times hard to stop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Players taking their game to the next level<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of Melbourne&#8217;s players &#8211; both experienced and not &#8211; took their games to the next level in Season 7, in a positive sign for the versatility and depth of the club&#8217;s list moving forward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"31021\" class=\"_dc_spo\" href=\"\/afl\/player\/maeve-chaplin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maeve Chaplin<\/a> made the most of a second chance given to her after being delisted at the end of Season 6, while <a data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"46416\" class=\"_dc_spo\" href=\"\/afl\/player\/tahlia-gillard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tahlia Gillard<\/a> really stepped up in the absence of some key Dees defenders and took the opportunity of more game time with both hands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile on the more experienced of the scale, <a data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"29946\" class=\"_dc_spo\" href=\"\/afl\/player\/sarah-lampard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Lampard<\/a> reinvented her games at times and spent some time on the wing and diversifying her game, while <a data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"29739\" class=\"_dc_spo\" href=\"\/afl\/player\/tayla-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tayla Harris<\/a> spent a fair bit of time in the ruck this season and proved to be quite the handy chop out for <a data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"29878\" class=\"_dc_spo\" href=\"\/afl\/player\/lauren-pearce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lauren Pearce<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blaithin Mackin is a natural already<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Melbourne&#8217;s offseason pick ups was a young star from County Armagh, who despite her rushed preseason has settled into footy so well, and looks like a natural 10 games into her footy career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"114164\" class=\"_dc_spo\" href=\"\/afl\/player\/blaithin-mackin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blaithin Mackin<\/a> slotted seamlessly onto a wing for the Dees, and the good thing for Dees fans is that she is only 23, so has plenty of seasons left in her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-glass-half-empty\"><strong>GLASS HALF EMPTY<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>33 does not go into 30&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite everything ultimately going right for the Dees this season, they have a list conundrum heading into next season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They had three players on their inactive list in Season 7 &#8211; <a data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"50232\" class=\"_dc_spo\" href=\"\/afl\/player\/gabby-colvin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gabby Colvin<\/a>, <a data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"42881\" class=\"_dc_spo\" href=\"\/afl\/player\/rhiannon-watt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rhi Watt<\/a> and <a data-type=\"player\" data-id=\"46544\" class=\"_dc_spo\" href=\"\/afl\/player\/eliza-mcnamara\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eliza McNamara<\/a> &#8211; who all need a spot back within Melbourne&#8217;s list of 30, so who makes way?
