good weekend for the travellers in the NTFLW

LAST weekend’s action in the NTFL Women’s competition saw the Wanderers almost break through for their first win of the season, but their inability to score in the second half ultimately cost them against Palmerston, going down by nine points.

It did not take long for the Wanderers to get on the board, with captain Shekeine De Satge slotting through a goal inside the first minute of the game.

De Satge was dangerous early, causing a lot of havoc for the Magpies and was rewarded with a second goal four minutes into the clash.

Palmerston took a while to even get the ball in its forward 50, but when it finally did get an opportunity to score, it could not make it count, only scoring a behind.

It took until the almost 14 minute mark for Palmerston to finally get a goal on the board, but it got one via Tabitha May to reduce the margin back to four points.

That would ultimately be the final score of the quarter, so at the first change it was the Wanderers who led by four points.

It was a fast start from the Wanderers in the second quarter too, with Meg De Sousa slotting her side’s third goal through a mere minute into the quarter.

Zippy Fish then belted one from 50m out to see the Wanderers extend their lead out even further.

A 50m penalty helped ensure Jessica Fatnowna was able to boot Palmerston’s second major of the afternoon.

De Sousa kicked her second in the dying minutes of the half and the Wanderers were starting to run away with the match a little.

De Sousa’s snag saw the Wanderers take a 17 point lead into the major break.

It was the Magpies who were the first to score a major in the third term, as May made the Wanderers pay for a dangerous kick across goal by slotting through her second only two minutes into the term.

Palmerston really lifted in the third term, and the Wanderers did not even really look like scoring for much of the front half of the term as the Magpies locked it in their forward half of the ground.

Dannielle Lawrence booted Palmerston’s second for the term as the margin was reduced even further to four points.

However, that would be the last score for the quarter as things continued to be tight but scrappy.

Momentum continued for the Magpies in the last quarter as Deanna Peckham ensured they took the lead a mere four minutes into the quarter.

Palmerston’s second goal for the quarter came off the boot of Ciana Niesner to extend its lead, and as the sun faded at TIO Stadium, so did the Wanderers hopes for a breakthrough win for 2022/23.

In other results:

PINT were the only home side to take the chocolates, comfortably accounting for Tiwi.

A four goal to none first quarter really set up the win for PINT, who went on to win by 28 points.

Jessie Baumer kicked three majors for the victors, while Maria Rioli booted two for Tiwi and played really well.

Nightcliff came from behind to defeat the Waratahs by a single point.

The Tigers were down by as much as two goals at quarter time, but slowly worked their way back into the match and ultimately pinched the win in the final quarter.

<a data-type="player" data-id="51667" O’Brien, Madison Hohn and Isobel Hartog all starred for Waratah.

After a tight start against Southern Districts, St Mary’s ultimately pulled away for a big win.

Things were tied at two goals apiece at quarter time, and slowly but surely St Mary’s put the foot down and asserted control, ultimately winning by 46 points.

Kaitlyn Armstrong had a field day in front of goal, booting six majors, while <a front of goals for Southern Districts, booting all four of her team’s goals, while Rhania Hewitt and Bessie Barrett were both among the best in the
