The Hornets had to share the spoils with Coorparoo in Round 1, while the Devils went down in a narrow loss to Wilston Grange, but it came nowhere near either of those events as the home team booted 13 goals after quarter time to romp to a 14.9 (93) to 1.4 (10) victory.

Though inaccuracy affected the Hornets at times, they controlled proceedings and never looked liked losing once they got their game going. However it was far from smooth sailing early as the Devils – thanks to a goal from Courtney McDonnell – lead by three points at the first break. The Hornets were able to keep touch with a major of their own, while the Devils would rue not capitalising on more of their four scoring shots.

Leading from the front, Courtney Daniec was able to show her experience, while the wide array of Hornets goalkickers were on display with Rachael Vetter (four goals), Holly Mirfield (three), Arianna Williams (two) and Mikayla Martin (two) all taking control in the match.

Martin has been a huge boost since moving south from Maroochydore, and was again among the best with Daniec, while Jaimie Bryant was named best-on in the win. The trio, along with Lucy Pengelly and rebounding talent Lucia Liessi helped steer the home side to take control after the first break.

Booting 3.6 to 0.1 in the second term, the Hornets definitely could have made more of their chances, but the weight of inside 50s eventually won out. Then the accuracy followed suit in the second half as they piled on 6.1 in the third term to set up the win by blowing the margin out to a massive 57 points.

Aspley was never going to be caught from there, as the Hornets kept Yeronga South Brisbane scoreless in the second half, and added another 4.2 in the final term for the big 83-point win. Louise Tyson was another Hornet who impressed, kicking a goal, and was one of seven to do so with Jessica Stallard the other player to hit the scoreboard.

For Yeronga South Brisbane, Camilla Burnett stepped up in what was a tough game, while Jess Matthews and Georgia Hewett were also named among the best. Trying hard all game, Farrandai Hopkins caught the eye, with Jaime Howell and Sophie Wheeler the others to shine for the coaches.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

Bond University maintained its unbeaten streak with a hard-fought two-goal win over Coorparoo on Anzac Day. The Bull Sharks had to get through a first half scrap where just the one goal was kicked to lead by eight points, before it opened up in the third term. Leading by just five points at the final change, the home side kicked the vital last goal and kept its opponent scoreless to win, 4.5 (29) to 2.5 (17).

Lily Tarlinton kicked a goal and was super impressive in the absence of Havana Harris, while bottom-ager Tara Harrington also starred booting two goals. Debutant Ava Usher made her way into the program and looked comfortable at senior level, while for the Kings, former Lions premiership skipper Emma Zielke kicked a goal, and Lucy Schneider also worked hard around the ground.

In a far more one-sided contest, premiership fancies Southport crushed Wilston Grange by 64 points at Fankhauser Reserve. Though the Gorillas did well to keep the Sharks to just 3.3 (21) at half-time, they had not scored themselves, and then Southport piled on another seven goals in the second half to run away with the contest, 10.6 (66) to 0.2 (2).

Georja Davies stepped into the lineup and slotted four goals on debut, while Maggie O’Connell kicked the three majors. Steph O’Brien was unsurprisingly everywhere in a best on ground performance. For the Gorillas, Annabel Pettigrew and Emma Gibson were named the best.

In a low-scoring tussle, Maroochydore outlasted University of Queensland to hand the reigning premiers their second straight loss to start the season. While a goal to Caitlin Laycock in the first term put the Red Lionesses up by six at quarter time, they only managed one more behind for the rest of the match, as the Roos ground out a 2.1 (13) to 1.2 (8) victory.

Renee Teys and Jya Epstein were named in the best for the roos, with Demi Norton backing up her strong Round 1 performance with another impressive Round 2 effort. For the Red Lionesses, captain Madi Crowley-Long and Ava Seton were again among their better players in the loss.

Mentions

Courtney Daniec

Mikayla Martin

Lucia Liessi

Lily Tarlinton

Tara Harrington

Ava Usher

Emma Zielke

Lucy Schneider

Maggie O’Connell

Steph O’Brien

Ava Seton

ASPLEY Hornets have come away comprehensive winners against Yeronga South Brisbane, giving their fans something to cheer about in Round 2 of the QAFL Women’s competition.
