Putting the foot down from early on, the Hornets booted three goals to nil in the opening term and opened up a 19-point lead, which in front of home fans was always going to be difficult to chase down.

The Gorillas did manage to kick the only goal of the second term to trim the half-time deficit to 11 points, but ultimately the third placed Hornets put the foot down to ensure Coorparoo could not catch them on percentage. Aspley kicked six goals to two in the second half to storm to a 9.3 (57) to 3.5 (23) victory.

Aspley’s victory came off the back of a dominant clearance rate, particularly in the middle where the Hornets won six of seven centre bounce clearances, as well as 14-5 clearances around the ground. That lead the Hornets to a plus-13 inside 50 differential, and therefore more scoring opportunities.

That scoring mostly laid in the hands of Stallard who clunked five marks inside 50s and slotted six straight goals to be the difference between the sides on the scoreboard. It was an efficient display from just nine touches,

Youngster Lucia Liessi dominated through the midfield with a massive nine clearances, as she, Mikayla Martin (six) and Courtney Daniec (five) all had days out at the coalface. Bottom-age prospect Zimra Hussain (six) was the only Wilston Grange player to have five or more.

The difference in disposal was also key, with the Hornets running it by hand far more, and finishing with a disposal efficiency of 60.9 per cent, compared to the Gorillas’ 32.1 per cent, something that has haunted them throughout the season. Still, Wilston Grange brought the heat and ensured the Hornets would not just storm to a huge win.

Martin finished with a game-high 26 disposals including 22 contested, and three inside 50s, working hard around the ball. Daniec lead from the front with 21 disposals – 13 contested – four tackles and three inside 50, while Liessi also chalked up 19 disposals and eight inside 50s.

For the Gorillas, Keyshia Matenga (23 disposals, four marks, two clearances and three tackles) was lively once again. Hussain, Grace O’Donnell and Kylie Welsh all picked up 20 disposals apiece in the loss, with Welsh being her side’s only multiple goalkicker in the loss. Mackenzie Findlay laid a game-high 10 tackles from 13 touches and three clearances to be strong resistance around the ground.

Aspley will remain at Graham Road for the weekend’s knockout semi-final against Coorparoo.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

Coorparoo wrapped up its regular season with an 87-point smashing of Maroochydore. Hitting the road made no difference to the Kings who showed their class at their best and slammed home 12.16 (88) to 0.1 (1) in the Round 16 match.

Laura Blue and Emma Zielke showed their experience for the Kings, as Chloe Gaunt slammed home five goals in the big win. Lucy Schneider (35 disposals) and Jo Miller (31) had the ball on a string. Renee Teys and Demi Norton were named as the best for Maroochydore.

Southport capped off its year with a statement over wooden spooners Yeronga South Brisbane. Almost keeping the Devils scoreless for the entire game, the Sharks booted 14.12 (96) to 0.1 (1) in the one-sided 95-point shellacking.

Maggie O’Connell (six goals) had a day out for Southport, while Carly Remmos ran rampant en route to 36 disposals, seven clearances, eight tackles, seven inside 50s and a goal. Sarah Ingram and Madeleine Watt were also impressive in the victor. Georgia Hewett and Peppa Poultney tried hard for the Gorillas.

Meanwhile Bond University had a bit more of a fight on its hands, defeating University of Queensland by 21 points at home. The Bull Sharks remain in front the whole way but could never quite completely shake the Red Lionesses, winning with an eventual 6.5 (41) to 3.2 (20) scoreline.

Courtney Sexton was named best-on for the Bull Sharks, collecting 17 disposals, five marks, three clearances, two inside 50s and laying 10 tackles. Jasmyn Davidson (24 hitouts from 15 disposals and a goal) also impressed, while teenager Ella Calleja had 14 disposals, three marks, three clearances, three tackles, five inside 50s and a goal.

Unsurprisingly, Ava Seton was enormous in the reigning premiers’ loss, picking up 30 disposals – 25 contested – seven clearances, nine inside 50s and laying nine tackles. Jane Childes and Lara Mason also worked hard at the stoppages, claiming six clearances each.

Mentions

Lucia Liessi

Mikayla Martin

Courtney Daniec

Zimra Hussain

Keyshia Matenga

Mackenzie Findlay

Laura Blue

Emma Zielke

Lucy Schneider

Maggie O’Connell

Carly Remmos

Peppa Poultney

Jasmyn Davidson

Ella Calleja

Ava Seton

A SIX-GOAL haul to Jessica Stallard resulted in Aspley getting the job done over Wilston Grange by 34 points as the QAFL Women’s regular season came to a close last weekend.
