Despite having a strong Academy, the Suns managed to snag both Kiara Bischa and Sienna McMullen on the cheap at Picks 50 and 51 respectively, as well as club-tied Territory talent Annabel Kievit with the third consecutive selection. Earlier in the draft, Gold Coast opted for Keely Fullerton (Pick 36) and Taya Oliver (44) in what was a well-rounded draft haul.

Keely Fullerton (Bendigo Pioneers / Vic Country)
30/01/2005 | 160cm | Wing / Small Forward

Fullerton is a damaging left-footer who might be small, but is quick and agile. She knows how to cover the ground and though she is not a high possession winner, is a high-impact player. Often starting on the wing then pushing forward, Fullerton knows where the goals are, usually able to hit the scoreboard or set up her teammates for goal-scoring opportunities. One with fantastic upside.

Taya Oliver (Coorparoo / Queensland)
17/10/2001 | Defender

The mature-age defender finished top five in the Zielke Medal this season and really established herself in the Kings’ outfit. One of two Kings – along with Jacinta Baldwick – to get picked up , Oliver is a rebounding player who takes the game on. Similar to Fullerton but a line back, the 22-year-old will provide a readymade option for the Suns off half-back or across the ground.

Kiara Bischa (Bond University / Queensland)
15/04/2005 | 171cm | Tall Defender

A steal at Pick 50, Bischa had a year to remember in defence for the Suns. She was particularly prolific one-on-one and was not afraid of a challenge. Bischa was a popular teammate at the Suns Academy, and held up at the national carnival too, with a sensational season all up. A player who could push for senior games earlier rather than later.

Sienna McMullen (Bond University / Queensland)
15/07/2005 | 164cm | Wing

The AFLW Academy member was a first round talent on ability, so to grab her at Pick 51 is another steal for the Suns. Boasting explosive speed, great evasion and nice decision making with ball-in-hand, McMullen nominating Queensland helped the Suns. While the Lions were pre-occupied with their own Academy members, Gold Coast bided its time and added the talented wing towards the end of the draft.

Annabel Kievit (Waratah / Northern Territory)
22/09/2005 | 176cm | Tall Utility

Having played for the Suns Academy at the Under 17 Championships a couple of years ago, Kievit is no stranger to the colours. Also winning a Rising Star through the NTFL Women’s competition, Kievit has long been touted as one to watch, with her size and athleticism really leading to a high upside. She does have limited exposure and is more raw that others, but has a booming kick and great versatility as well.

SUMMARY

Gold Coast Suns selected five players to add to its Season 9 list throughout the 2023 AFL Women’s Draft, with three Queenslanders and a fourth player tied to the club. Fullerton is the outlier in that regard, but as a country kid will have no problems settling in, and has a big future ahead of her in the Sunshine State.

Mentions

Kiara Bischa

Sienna McMullen

Annabel Kievit

Keely Fullerton

Taya Oliver

GOLD Coast was one of the more active teams on AFL Women’s Draft night, picking up five players including three locals.
