Southport 12.7 (79)

FIRST QUARTER

The Sharks brought the pressure early, capitalising off their centre clearance dominance, finding speedy exits from Madeleine Watt.

The Kings were peppered early defensively but found ways to stand up with spoils and contests from Kaitlyn Zelinski and a team-lifting run-down tackle through the corridor from Georgina Ott.

Moving through the corridor the class difference was with the Sharks ability to move it cleaner in transition, which started to take presence with nice entries inside 50 through Kierra Zerafa and Stephanie O’Brien.

Tayla Gregory made an immediate impact inside forward 50, utilising her strong bodywork in the contest to take a solid mark, accompanying it with a nice set shot.

The next play later, O’Brien and Gregory linked up, made possible through O’Brien’s run and carry through the corridor to overlap her opponent and find Gregory alone in the goalsquare.

Some late forward smarts from Alyssa Gall who positioned well outside of the major contest found the ball falling right into her lap, as she went back to convert the first major for the Kings.

SECOND QUARTER

Back-and-forth transition encapsulated the majority of the second quarter as neither team could seem to assert dominance inside 50.

O’Brien yet again flexed her muscles, creating her own space inside 50, and finding herself on the end of a great kick from Maddy Baldwin.

That wasn’t all from O’Brien, with the next goal up there for one of her finest, spinning out of the stoppage, to break through to goal, kicking a big goal to create some breathing space in the game.

The speed off half-back from Emily Bleney gave the Kings some life in transition, but the Sharks headed into the rooms for the better, up by 14 at half time.

THIRD QUARTER

Watt opened the second half for the Sharks with her continual energy out of the centre stoppages, trapping the ball inside forward 50 early.

Baldwin elevated her intensity to another level in the second half, finding her first goal through an extremely precise set shot on a different angle.

As the Sharks kept pushing forward in transition, they were finding crafty ways to move it inside 50 but were denied some terrific opportunities by the presence of Zelinski to run down Watt one shot away from goal.

Watt made up for it moments later, making use of her running patterns inside 50 to gather and dish the handball off to Maighan Fogas who slotted the kick from 20 metres out on the run.

Gregory was the beneficiary of a high free-kick outside the goal square, extending the margin out to five goals.

Whilst the Kings were kept scoreless in the second quarter, they still did well defensively to limit the Sharks chances at goal.

FOURTH QUARTER

On the offensive end for the Kings, Kayla Geddes and Jessica Watts provided some drive inside 50, lowering their eyes to keep the Sharks defence on the move.

It wasn’t long before the Sharks put the game to bed, finding innovative ways to goal through Baldwin, who read the short set shot kick well to take a contested mark outside the goal square and slot her first of three in the final quarter.

Gregory started the Sharks moment of brilliance for the day midway through the last quarter with a lovely pickup inside 50 from a ground ball, dishing it off to Fogas, who put it on a platter for Baldwin who snapped her third from 25m out.

The defence opened up late for the Sharks as they kicked two of their easier-earned goals from Baldwin and Zerafa.

The Kings were determined to finish the game on a high and were rewarded for their consistent effort around the contest with a goal from Grace Perry, who finished with two.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

Aspley extended its lead to two games clear at the top of the ladder with a 65-point win over Wilston Grange.

Jessica Stallard picked up where she left off from last week’s five-goal performance, finishing with four goals, whilst Lucia Liessi was crafty in the midfield with 23 disposals.

Keyshia Matenga finished with 14 disposals for the Gorillas, whilst Charlize Anderson was physically imposing with eight contested possessions.

Bond University was dominant from start to finish, keeping Maroochydore goalless in their 73-point win.

Shannon Nolan had a day out with 35 disposals and a goal, whilst Isabella Iverach led the goalkickers with three. Kangaroos, finishing with 20 disposals and three clearances.

The University of Queensland kept Yeronga South Brisbane goalless up to three-quarter time, convincing 49-point winners.

Jane Childes led the disposal tally with 26 disposals, 16 of those contested, whilst Elka Barnett finished with 18 disposals and three goals.

Chelsea Winn had a big day out for the Devils with 29 disposals and seven clearances.

<div class="wp-block-dc-block-dc-mention
