They opted to select her with pick three, but not before keeping Gold Coast “honest” with a bid on Academy member, Havana Harris. O’Hehir’s has predominantly played off half-back or on-ball but also spent time on a wing and up forward as well.

While Maggie Mahony shares a similar competitive edge to O’Hehir, the pair are very different players. Mahony is 163cm and does her best work at ground level, with her balance between offensive and defensive traits very handy. While not having the explosiveness of O’Hehir, Mahony has long been a consistent player, winning the ball consistently and able to impact forward of centre when playing inside 50.

The third and final selection in the draft went the way of indoor hockey player, Amelia Dethridge. A surprise that had everyone scrambling to find out more, Dethridge is known for her powerful athleticism and high-level endurance which will be a great base for the future. No doubt the Demons will aim to further develop her fundamentals and see how much she can impact at AFLW level in the future.

In terms of readymade prospects, O’Hehir and Mahony could both step into the side Round 1 if required. Both have elite endurance, and can fill out multiple roles depending on where coach Mick Stinear sees them. O’Hehir in particularly will automatically have the natural talent and senior experience to impact, while Mahony did play for Collingwood VFLW and racked up the ball with ease too. Dethridge will be more of a development player, but is a big watch to see how she tracks through the year.

Mentions

Molly O’Hehir

Maggie Mahony

AN EXPLOSIVE and versatile top-end tall along with a competitive small highlighted Melbourne’s early AFLW Draft selections, followed by taking a punt on an indoor hockey player with the last pick in the draft. >> EVERY PICK: National Draft | Recap DRAFT HAUL National Draft: 3.
