The AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division finals hopefuls had too much experience for an improved Dragons outfit, coming away with a 44-point win.

Keeping the Dragons goalless for three quarters – including scoreless in the first half and leading by 37 points at the main break – UTS only conceded one major for the entire match during the comprehensive 7.10 (52) to 1.2 (8) victory.

The clash kicked off Round 7 of action in the competition with the games initially scheduled for a fortnight earlier, but were washed out. The result was one of two on the night with Sydney University defeating UNSW-ES Bulldogs by 32 points (9.7 (61) to 4.5 (29) in the other match.

In-form top-ager Sophia Gaukrodger was ultra impressive for the Bats in the win, slotting four goals and was named among the best with fellow teenager Aoife Berry. Strong target Brianna-Lee Wade finished with a pair of goals, while Emelye Blades also impressed.

For the Dragons, Caydelan Mitchell-Bruce was named best on, with Giants Academy prospect Montana Doubell once again standing out. St George would have loved to see the return of key forward Grace Parsons, but the top 30 AFLW Draft prospect has been named for the All Stars down at Whitten Oval on Sydney and was therefore unavailable to make her return.

In the Students’ win over the Bulldogs, Amanda Farrugia was best on ground once again booting two goals in the win, as did the equally impressive Frances Walsh who returned from her Swans Academy duties to have a hand in a couple of goals herself. Emma Juneja also caught the eye with her run.

REMAINING ROUND 7 GAMES

PENNANT HILLS DEMONS vs. NORTH SHORE BOMBERS
Friday, June 6 @ 7:20pm
Mike Kenny Oval

Everything about this game depends on the midfield battle and whether or not the young Demons can put any pressure on the running linkage exits of the Bombers. Expect to see Adrienne Keefe often used as a target up forward. However North Shore knows how to share the goals around, and will be looking to use multiple avenues which should result in a dominant win.

PARRAMATTA GOANNAS vs. EAST COAST EAGLES
Saturday, June 7 @ 10:00am
Gipps Road Ovals

Everything about the final margin will depend on whether the Eagles get their linkages right heading into the forward line. The must get back to their release running as the secondary players proactively find the next link in the chain. East Coast are in line for a massive win here considering the Goannas’ struggles, and it will be about fine tuning for the future as they try and work their way back up the ladder. If East Coast’s forwardline can get proactive, then the visitors could be in for a percentage-boosting win.

Mentions

Sophia Gaukrodger

Aoife Berry

Caydelan Mitchell-Bruce

Montana Doubell

Grace Parsons

Amanda Farrugia

Frances Walsh

Emma Juneja

UTS BATS proved too good for St George Dragons in a special Thursday night clash at Olds Park last night.
