The Tigers got up 10.6 (66) to 10.4 (64) and deserved the win, though the Falcons would have loved an extra couple of minutes on the clock as they were coming hard at the back-to-back champions.

At one point in the third term it looked like being a complete blowout as the Tigers lead by 27 points in the eighth minute of the quarter. At that stage, Rachel Ortlepp was on fire with four majors, and Bec Anderson became the sixth individual goalkicker for Claremont taking the scoreline to 9.4 (58) to 5.1 (31).

It was a good night for accurate goalkicking as both sides hardly missed, booting 20.10 in total, but the real story was the Falcons fight. Missing both National Academy members in Cara Dziegielewski and Lexi Strachan as well as double bottom-age gun Bella Nelson, the Falcons dug deep with the chips stacked against them.

South Fremantle recruit Zoe Huggett dominated close to goal, matching Ortlepp’s tally of four with two in each half and almost had a fifth that was just touched on the line by second-gamer India Bonadeo. That spoil by the talented top-ager proved to be a match-winning moment in the final few minutes, as the teams looked out on their feet with the intense four-quarter effort.

When Lunay Van Den Heever took a mark 30m out from goal in a contest that left Huggett a little worse for wear, the top-ager realised with a minute left she had to just go back and drill the goal. She did just that as Huggett ensured the umpires did not take any time off the clock for her – with no time on – and her teammate nailed the major, her second of the contest.

That goal marked five of the last six in the game, which was sparked by Huggett’s third in the last few minutes of the premiership quarter. Irish recruit Ellee McEvoy banged home two either side of the final break, with her second major a brilliant strike from 40m. That goal cut the deficit to three points, and it looked like West Perth was going to surge over the top of Claremont.

Anderson steadied the ship midway through the quarter, but the Falcons kept coming right until the final moments. Fortunately for Claremont, its midfield had been on top all game, so having the last centre clearance to go forward and kill the clock was enough to secure the win. Juliet Kelly (31 disposals, 10 tackles) and Matilda Sergeant (26 disposals, four marks) were both strong, while ruck Matilda Husband (18 disposals, 19 hitouts and a goal) proved too experienced for West Perth’s duo.

On top of the midfield – that included a couple of big efforts from Jess Freame and Sarah Viney as well – it was the Ortlepp show up forward with her four majors to really build the Tigers’ lead early. Her sister Claire Ortlepp was reliable as ever down back with Abby Maynard also impressive, while Bonadeo had her moments too.

For the Falcons, despite being beaten in the midfield overall, Megan Norbury (21 disposals, three marks and six tackles) continued her development on-ball strongly, while McEvoy finished with two goals from 19 disposals and seven tackles providing the spark. Huggett’s four majors up front and Sara Riou booting a goal from 15 touches were among the best, while top-agers Van Den Heever and Rikisha Nannup worked hard.

WEST PERTH 3.0 | 5.1 | 7.2 | 10.4 (64)
CLAREMONT 3.1 | 8.3 | 9.5 | 10.6 (66)

GOALS:
West Perth: Z. After an even opening quarter, Swan Districts piled on five goals to nil, and with a further four goals to two in the second half, ran out 10.5 (65) to 2.5 (17) winners.

Swan Districts star midfielder Jaime Henry (38 disposals, six marks) had leather poisoning once again, well supported by the likes of Jessica Cox (27 disposals) and Naomi Baker (22),while Taylah Edwards and Ashley Sharp kicked three goals apiece. Shannyn Pomersbach booted two for the Bulldogs, while Ashleigh Gomes and Mikayla Hyde were their side’s best in defeat.

East Fremantle proved too experienced for a young Peel Thunder side, kicking away after quarter time to boot seven goals to one in a commanding performance. The result meant the Sharks are on the board in season 2026 after a goalless start to the season in defeat against South Fremantle, defeating the Thunder 9.5 (59) to 3.1 (19).

Noa McNaughton was best on ground in her 51st WAFLW game, racking up 29 disposals and booting two goals, while the difference Claremont recruit Mackenzie Webb made coming into the back half was evident. Winger Olivia McCay (22 disposals, one goal) was busy all day, as Eve Wilson-Sieber kicked a game-high three goals. For the Thunder, Kate Bartlett kicked two majors, while Cassie Davidson was reliable as ever out of defence with Holly Bilcich.

Perth finally got its chance to unveil half a side of new recruits after a bye in Round 1, but unfortunately failed to come away with any points against Subiaco. The Demons looked good for the most part, but could not convert on the scoreboard, only kicking five behinds after quarter time. Subiaco kicked that exact amount in the first half, but capitalised far more when it was the Lions turn with 3.1 in the second half to record a 3.6 (24) to 1.6 (12) victory.

Experienced Lions Paige Sheppard (37 disposals, seven marks and five tackles), Lisa Steane (32 disposals, five marks and seven tackles) and Krstel Petrevski (27 disposals, three tackles) all stuffed the stats sheet, while Annabel Johnson and Dahna Lee were great in defence once more and Tess Lyons stood up in the ruck. Isabella Shannon (27 disposals, four tackles) was busy across the ground, while new recruit Amy Trindade kicked her side’s only goal and top-ager Mia Carlshausen was slick out of the back half.

CLAREMONT has survived an almighty comeback from West Perth in the final term of the two sides’ WAFL Women’s clash with the reigning premiers holding on to win by two points.
