Her lovely long kick down the wing in the opening term set up a contest, and she showed a nice read of the play to mark on the defensive side of the middle late in the final term and convert cleanly to the wing. She is reliable rather than spectacular, but her decision making coming out of defence and her ability to peel off and be aggressive forward of the ball give her a two-way quality that continues to impress through the opening month of the season.

#13 Shaya Yarran
Wing | 160cm | 24/12/2008

Stats: 11 disposals, 2 marks, 5 tackles, 2 inside 50s

Yarran came off the bench in the first term and was active on the wing once introduced, winning a handball receive and getting the ball downfield before taking on Nannup as her direct opponent through the middle stages of the game. She showed a good strong mark in the final term and drove long down the ground, though it was cut off. Competitive when the ball came her way.

#24 Summer Ajduk
Wing/Forward | 171cm | 12/11/2008

Stats: 18 disposals, 9 marks, 3 tackles, 6 inside 50s

Ajduk was lively and involved across the game, doing her best work through the first half where her intercept marking at half-forward was a feature. A confident grab at half-forward in the second term and a kick into the danger zone that created a contest showed her ability to read the ball in flight. Racking up nine marks in the contest, Ajduk was able to impact in the air and at ground level as she gathered cleanly at half-back in the final term and drove it down the ground along the wing on numerous occasions. Her ground coverage and spread again a positive feature of her performance.

WEST PERTH:

#13 Rikisha Nannup
Wing | 165cm | 23/04/2008

Stats: 10 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 1 inside 50, 2 behinds

Nannup was tidy across four quarters on the wing, doing her best work with clean hands off the ground and reliable ball use when in possession. She showed good composure spinning out of a tackle in the final term to kick to the half-forward, and was still finding the ball late with clean hands off in the dying moments. Not a massive accumulator, but always seems to catch the eye with some key decisions around the ground.

#16 Tayah Nicholson
Defender | 173cm | 10/01/2008

Stats: 7 disposals, 5 tackles, 1 inside 50

Nicholson had her best moments in the second half, with a clean hands-off from a wing stoppage in the third term and an intercept mark at half-forward followed by a kick inside 50 to a teammate for a shot on goal her highlight. Always physical, Nicholson showed a willingness to drive inside 50 late in the game to create. A quieter afternoon overall but with some genuine impact moments.

#19 Lunay Van Den Heever
Forward | 170cm | 10/12/2008

Stats: 10 disposals, 4 marks, 1 tackle, 2 inside 50s, 1 goal

Van Den Heever’s best moment came at a critical juncture in the second term – gathering off hands inside 50, bursting forward and snapping a goal against the momentum to answer a Swans score. That kind of response in a pressure moment is a quality in itself. She showed good composure and kept her feet well in a one-on-one contest on the wing in the first term, and took off well from the wing midway through the opening quarter. A player who makes things happen when the moment requires it.

#25 Lexi Strachan
Midfielder | 169cm | 30/09/2008

Stats: 23 disposals, 8 tackles, 4 inside 50s, 1 behind

Strachan was impressive and arguably the most impressive academy member on show across the four games, producing a tireless, all-action performance through the midfield. She was a constant contested presence, setting up Zoe Huggett with a wheeling kick in the second term that showed real midfield creativity. Her best sequence came in the third term, running hard forward off the clearance to win it and getting it to Elle McEvoy who set up another Huggett goal in the opening minute. She appeared to pull up with cramp late in the game but pushed through it, continuing to apply tackles and win possession in the closing stages. She combined her aerial control with smart play – a lovely short pass across the ground to Nannup from the middle in the first term showed her awareness as a ball user – before slotting a goal from the goalsquare when rotating forward late in the first term. Her speed for a tall was again a feature, with great follow-up work after her own ruck taps in the third term highlighting her athleticism. She was reliable coming out of defence and showed her composure taking kick-outs — thumping them long and accurately. She was sharp again in the third term, marking one-on-one against Grage at centre half-back before delivering a nice bullet kick to the wing.

#8 Tiama Collard
Wing | 164cm | 08/04/2009

Stats: 14 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles

Collard continued her promising start to the season with another two-way performance across the wing and drifting to help out off half-back. She was clean with her hands and showed a nice one-handed take on the wing in the first term. While beaten one-on-one in the air, Collard did showcase her nice leap at different points. Her ground coverage remained elite, appearing in the forward pocket not long after marking in the back pocket in the final term, and she read the ball off hands well in the third term to set up a forward move.

#9 Maya Walsh
Defender | 170cm | 20/02/2009

Stats: 5 disposals, 1 mark, 3 tackles, 1 inside 50, 1 behind

Walsh spent most of the game in a defensive role, doing her best work with a strong long left-foot kick down the wing from half-back. She was largely focused on her defensive assignment, coming out to escort the ball over the line at the wing in the third term to keep it safe. Her first half showed her ability to cover ground – intercepting a handball on the defensive side of the middle and charging forward to deliver a nice handball on the overlap through the corridor was her best first-half moment. She got caught holding the ball a couple of times when trying to create, but it was the right idea. She had a poor set shot from the goalsquare in the second term that went for a behind from straight in front, but responded strongly in the final term with a composed set shot from 30 metres that she converted cleanly for a goal.
