In Round 3 against the Gold Coast Suns Academy, she made every kilometre worthwhile. Day booted seven goals in the 15-point win in a performance that has set the tone for her top-age season.

>> AFLW DRAFT Q&A: Majella Day (GWS Giants Academy)

Majella Day

Club: GWS Giants Academy
Height: 177cm
Date of Birth: 11/03/2008

STRENGTHS:

+ Overhead marking
+ Goal sense
+ Finishing
+ Versatility
+ Scoreboard impact
+ X-factor

IMPROVEMENTS:
– Explosiveness
– Ground-level consistency

SEASON SO FAR

Statistics: 19 disposals, 4 marks (1 contested), 5 tackles, 2 hitouts, 2 clearances, 7 inside 50s, 7 goals, 1 behind (Round 3 vs Gold Coast Suns Academy)

FIRST QUARTER

Day was active from the opening minute, taking a mark just outside 50 and kicking to the hotspot before immediately applying pressure with a tackle and taking on ruck duties at the forward stoppage. She was a presence without the rewards early – overrunning a ground ball when the kick to her was poor, and losing a ruck contest to the taller Sienna Clinch – but her instincts in front of goal were already evident.

Her first goal in the sixth minute came off a teammate’s tackle which split the ball, and then Day scooped it up, burst inside 50 and slammed it home on the run. Her second was pure opportunism – staying alert on the goalline from a set shot that fell short, climbing over the top of smaller opponent Shayla McDonald with a one-take grab and converting without hesitation. Two goals from limited involvement, and already giving the Suns’ defence a major headache.

SECOND QUARTER

The quarter that set the game up, and the one that showed the breadth of what Day brings beyond just scoring. A brilliant clean handball off the deck between opponents in the third minute set up Darcie Prosser-Shaw for a direct assist, showing her awareness outside of her own goalscoring instincts. Her third goal came from her best piece of forward craft, reading Ellie Da Ros’s ruck tap perfectly at the forward stoppage and throwing it on the boot in one movement.

She kept competing hard around the stoppages, laid a tackle and forced the ball clear after being immediately caught, and was unfortunate to hit the post on a snap in the 18th minute. Her fourth goal – great bodywork to nudge her opponent under the ball, take it cleanly, and snap from 20 metres – came in the final minute to give the Giants a decisive buffer at the main break. Four goals, a goal assist, and constant pressure acts across the term.

THIRD QUARTER

A quieter term, which reflected the ebb and flow of a contest where Gold Coast had the early ascendency and kept the ball in the other half for extended periods. Day pushed up into the middle when the opportunities were scarce rather than standing idle, though was outpointed by Annabelle Foat reading a turnover quicker as Day had drifted further up the ground.

Her most important contribution came at the seven-minute mark, marking in the middle, earning a 50-metre penalty, and playing on immediately to run in and slam home a crucial fifth goal when the Suns had kicked one to cut the margin to 12 points. That goal proved to be the only score of the term and kept the Giants’ advantage alive heading into the final quarter. Still working, still competing, still dangerous, even in a quarter where the ball barely came her way.

FOURTH QUARTER

The final term was where Day showed everything that makes her a genuine first-round talent. After limited early involvement she was involved in two defining passages. The first came at the 10-minute mark. Day took a mark that was called play-on, she darted left, feigned a handball, turned back and threaded a checkside through the goals from a tight angle when the game was on the line and the Suns had hit the front. Three points up, match turning, pure individual brilliance.

Her seventh goal three minutes from time was the full stop. Billie Hamilton fed her perfectly in a one-on-one with Chudley, and Day used her body brilliantly to get behind her opponent, take the mark over the top from 15 metres, and then strolled in to seal the win. It marked Day’s seventh goal and one of the great individual performances of the season to-date.

SUMMARY

Day described herself as “very versatile” in the preseason, but performances like the one against the Suns Academy is why forward is where she belongs. The instinct, the composure in tight moments, and an improved willingness to keep competing through quiet patches up the ground when required. Her checkside goal under pressure to reclaim the lead when the game was in the balance is a microcosm of her game in a moment. A really impressive performance.

Mentions

MAJELLA Day’s journey to the top of the AFLW Draft conversation has been defined by sacrifice — two-and-a-half hours to training, an hour-and-a-half to local competition, and years of grinding in a regional program to earn her spot in the Giants Academy.
