He attended seven of eight centre bounces for the term, finishing up forward after producing arguably his best moment across the 25 minutes.

Webb chased up a loose ball at half-forward and with the pressure of an oncoming opponent, picked up the ball cleanly off the deck before skipping into space with a terrific blind turn. From there, he lowered his eyes to hit up Jackson Penney with a composed entry kick.

Outside of that moment, much of Webb’s contribution was made on the inside. He burrowed in to win the contested ball, handling it cleanly at ground level and distributing handballs to his runners. He showed great craft in doing so, using his strong frame to push off opponents and access the drop zone off taps.

Webb’s tackling was another strong feature of his opening term. He wrapped up opposition ball winners with ruthless intent and forced repeat stoppages. His physicality was also felt when crashing an aerial pack on the quarter time siren, further highlighting his competitive nature.

SECOND QUARTER:

Just as Norwood continued to put the foot down in term two, Webb continued to prove he was the game’s premier first possession winner. He muscled himself to the drop of the tap, took the ball cleanly, and dished out to runners on repeat at the centre bounces.

Webb’s contested ball-winning acumen facilitated many of North’s centre stoppage exits, drawing a crowd and absorbing the pressure before releasing his side’s running players. He even showed a bit of agility to step through traffic in one instance, exhibiting great power.

There wasn’t too much to speak of in terms of Webb’s impact outside the contest. He picked up uncontested marks in either arc and moved the ball on with minimal fuss, although was stiff to have his forward 50 kick deemed too short.

He tended to cruise along on the spread, not breaking with any great intensity in transition. Given Webb’s near-permanent midfield residency, it meant that if he didn’t win first possession at stoppage, he found it difficult to remain involved. Still, he was easily the Roosters’ best in a poor first half with 14 disposals.

THIRD QUARTER:

North Adelaide responded in the third quarter and Webb remained central to that at the source. His one-touch handling down low and off the taps was terrific, while also proving shrewd as the play unfolded to make intercepts among his repeat ball-winning efforts.

Webb picked holes in congestion to flick the ball out effectively and held strong through the core to stand up in tackles. While his work was one-dimensional at times, he had a great moment of composure to cut in and kick wide from the defensive side of the corridor, opening up the play for his side.

He had a rotation forward and attended four of six centre bounces throughout the term. Arguably the first time he was beaten to the ball there happened late in the quarter, but he otherwise continued to own the stoppage domain.

FOURTH QUARTER:

A shift in tact from Webb was instrumental in North snatching a draw from way back. He came to life in the second half of the final term, most notably with his running goal on the end of three bounces. After gathering on the wing, he surged towards goal and gave his side a spark by converting.

After countless stand-and-deliver contributions at the centre bounces, he burst forward from one late in the piece to send the Roosters inside 50, showing greater intent to take the game on and make things happen. His expansive efforts were rewarded as the points were shared via a kick after the siren.

Mentions

Archie Simpson

Memphis Webb

NORTH Adelaide snatched a dramatic draw against Norwood via Archie Simpson‘s kick after the siren, but Memphis Webb was among the key catalysts in his side’s unlikely comeback.
