Though the Chargers are a quality outfit, they’ve slipped to 1-3 for the year off the back of a remarkably tough start to the season.

We took note of some of the players who caught the eye from both sides in the match.

Team

Oakleigh Chargers

Swans Academy

OAKLEIGH CHARGERS:

#3 Cleo Barbakas
Ruck/Forward | 182cm | 07/01/2009

Stats: 17 disposals, 1 mark, 3 tackles, 16 hitouts, 4 clearances, 7 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s, 1 goal

The most compelling individual of the match. Barbakas is an athletic ruck with a genuine forward threat, winning front position on Wain through smart body use and leaping above her on a number of occasions – no small feat against an opponent of Wain’s calibre. Her follow-up work was a feature, tracking stoppages and charging through to create second opportunities. The highlight was a fantastic contested mark in the first term 20 metres out directly in front, which she converted calmly for goal. Ran off half-back in third quarter to show her ground coverage and contributed across multiple positions throughout. Kicking inside 50 can be intercepted and the foot skills need further development, but the athleticism, competitiveness and forward instinct are already there. A 2027 name to circle.

#5 Isabelle Godfrey
Wing | 162cm | 11/08/2008

Stats: 16 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 4 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s

The dancing feet that define Godfrey’s game were a consistent feature in both directions. Her best moment came in quarter three, with a fantastic intercept mark running through traffic in defence, followed up by an effective kick without breaking stride while changing direction. She also applied smart defensive pressure on Walsh when the Swans midfielder threatened to run into goal. Evasion and agility on the wing are a couple of her top traits; she sidesteps opponents cleanly and creates separation to keep the ball moving. Can be a touch fumbly at ground level but the two-way athleticism is the platform to build on.

#11 Isabella Mazzei
Midfielder | 169cm | 06/06/2008

Stats: 19 disposals, 2 marks, 5 tackles, 7 clearances, 1 inside 50, 1 rebound 50

The game-high seven clearances reflect Mazzei’s most compelling trait – she is relentlessly competitive at the coalface and takes the ball out of situations others can’t. Her clean hands in tight space are the standout, with quick disposal and a willingness to lurk at every stoppage regardless of the game state. A big centre clearance in the third quarter when Oakleigh went 23 points down showed she doesn’t go missing under pressure. Disposal by foot can let her down when given time, but the inside competitive instincts are genuinely draftable.

#13 Zoe Curry
Midfielder/Forward | 172cm | 09/10/2008

Stats: 26 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 6 clearances, 6 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 behind

Oakleigh’s busiest ball-winner and a player who demands the ball at every opportunity. She continually managed to get the ball free whilst in a tackle, and went inside 50 six times reflecting genuine willingness to link from stoppages into attack. Boasting her powerful boot and using it down down the wing and out of clearances was a recurring positive – she thumped the ball out of danger and into scoring positions effectively across the middle quarters. The execution in front of goal is could have made it an even better day with a fourth term snap on the wrong side of the post, and a set shot attempt from 45 metres sailed wide and out on the full.

#31 Sophia Green
Midfielder/Defender | 170cm | 22/11/2008

Stats: 21 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles, 4 clearances, 2 rebound 50s

Green improved as the game progressed and was noticeably more influential in the second half. She carried the ball out of defence with purpose, and covered the ground well using her elite tank. The second term 50-metre penalty – failing to retreat to her line from a mark and gifting Tidemann a goal – was a lapse that hurt the scoreboard, and she had a few ‘almost’ moments early. Overall was solid across the board and always works hard to spread into space. With father-daughter ties to Carlton adding external interest, she’ll be one to track through the rest of the season.

#36 Molly Phillips
Forward | 165cm | 01/10/2008

Stats: 27 disposals, 2 marks, 6 tackles, 4 inside 50s

Shared the most disposals in the match and covered the ground exceptionally well from contest to contest – the engine and tank are clearly there. Her fourth term work rate was a standout, getting to repeat stoppages through pure running capacity. The execution, however, was a persistent area to improve, which is the next step. The physical foundation is promising and the pressure numbers are great, it is now a matter of marrying those gifts with reliable disposal.

Zoe Curry is continuing her great form in season 2026. Tidemann’s kicking is a clear point of difference — penetrating, well-weighted and she delivers under pressure with confidence. Her seven inside 50s reflected constant forward intent, and her seven tackles showed a two-way commitment you don’t always see from attack-minded players. Goaled from a 50-metre penalty in the second term and her while her long kick from defence – well-weighted across the corridor – in the same quarter – was one of the kicks of the match. Can try to do too much when operating at speed, as shown when she was wrapped up trying to take an opponent on, but the natural talent is undeniable. One of the competition’s leading prospects.

#2 Evie Bowie
Midfielder | 170cm | 31/12/2008

Stats: 25 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 2 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 goal, 1 behind

Electric out of the blocks and one of the match’s most influential players through the first half. Her ability to dart out of stoppages with pace and distribute quickly – extracting the ball from defence and getting it moving – was a consistent theme. The second term snap from 30 metres under late contact was a quality goal. Equally impressive was her fourth quarter defensive work, locking the ball up on the wing through pressure alone and winning subsequent possession. A genuine two-way midfielder with a terrific athletic base.

#3 Frances Walsh
Wing/Midfielder | 173cm | 30/01/2008

Stats: 25 disposals, 6 marks, 3 tackles, 1 inside 50, 3 rebound 50s

The most aesthetically pleasing player on the ground for long stretches and her game-high six marks reflected how often she got herself into quality positions. Walsh’s sidestep, her ability to link in transition and the weighting on her kicks are all a level above – her first term play was as fluent as anyone’s, combining with Tidemann and operating on both wings with natural rhythm. A rare hesitation in the second term – she won a handball receive and was immediately tackled by two opponents – showed the execution and decision making can still be improved under quick attention.

#10 Aurelia Russell
Midfielder/Forward | 160cm | 03/12/2008

Stats: 21 disposals, 2 marks, 6 tackles, 3 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 behind

Quietly competitive across four quarters with six tackles and smart movement in and out of stoppages. Her vision stood out, with her disposal by foot and understanding of the game – such as using the stand rule to perfection by playing on, taking a bounce and kicking confidently downfield. She can be wayward by foot when under immediate pressure, but reads the ball off hands instinctively. Her fourth term was sharp, with her explosiveness out of stoppages and execution once in space, continuing her fantastic 2026 form.

#15 Emma Haley
Midfielder/Forward | 160cm | 15/10/200

Stats: 17 disposals, 3 marks, 7 tackles, 1 clearance, 1 inside 50

Haley is the kind of player who helps glue the side together thanks to her relentless pressure that doesn’t always show in the disposal column. Her quick hands in congestion were a recurring positive, and a perfectly placed pass to Lolita Savala on the lead in the second term was the kind of vision-by-foot moment that gets overlooked when her pressure is the go-to focus. Barlow’s intercept marking was a feature – she reads the flight early and positions well, with a fantastic high grab late in the second term followed by a long kick across half-back one of the game’s better individual moments. Goaled from a 50-metre penalty after winning a free at centre half-forward in the opening quarter, and her second term goalmouth work – bringing a one-on-one contest to ground and getting a handball away while losing her footing – was an example of composure under pressure. One of the most underrated players in this draft crop.

#21 Emma McCallum
Defender | 173cm | 13/03/2009

Stats: 13 disposals, 4 marks, 8 tackles, 1 clearance, 1 inside 50, 2 rebound 50s, 1 goal

The game-high eight tackles is the headline and the clearest expression of McCallum’s style – aggressive, physical and committed to the contest whether the ball is near or far. She pushed forward early to earn a fortunate goal, threw it on the boot and watched it bounce through from long-range. Her four marks reflected confident aerial intent across both forward and defensive roles, and she goes for her marks with conviction even when the percentages are against her. A really promising bottom-ager who is one to note down for next year as she can play on talls or smalls.

#27 Amaia Wain
Ruck | 179cm | 31/08/2007

Stats: 13 disposals, 3 marks, 6 tackles, 19 hitouts, 2 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s, 1 goal

Wain had her first real massive challenge up against Barbakas who is equally gifted in athleticism. For the first time, she did not just win every hitout, but split the honours with the Chargers’ number one ruck. However when facing anyone else, she leapt over them with ease, and her follow-up work was fantastic. It will be the last time we see Wain in Swans colours, but not the last time in her Bulldogs jumper, moving from UNSW to the Western Bulldogs who took her with Pick 4 in Monday’s AFLW Preseason Draft, a richly deserved call.

Mentions

Oakleigh Chargers vs Swans Academy

SYDNEY Swans Academy’s strong first half and great defensive performance in the second half set them up for another victory, this time defeating Oakleigh Chargers by 26 points in the Talent League Girls competition.
