Her first significant ball-winning moment came at the four-minute mark, winning cleanly off a tap and, when immediately tackled, extracting a clearance to space with composure.

She competed well in a one-on-one aerial contest inside 50 at the seven-minute mark, getting the ball out of bounds, before a lovely half-forward mark in the eighth minute led to a precise kick to the hotspot. Her best passage of the quarter came midway through the term with a clean gather in the middle, and though she was tackled, still got the handball away to a teammate who kicked inside 50.

That moment was followed by a remarkable piece of football IQ where she picked the ball up off the deck, handballed to herself when confronted to run onto, kicked inside 50, and put it on a plate for a teammate to hit Steph Simmonds straight in front.

Another clean pickup off the deck and a snap towards goal fell just short but allowed a teammate to take a shot. She rotated forward late and looked a threat before Tori Evans got back to clear. Six disposals for the quarter — understated numbers for a player who was all over the ground.

SECOND QUARTER

Back on-ball against Georgie Fielder, Cocks was winning first possessions regularly but finding opponents on her quickly. Early in the term she showed elite hands at ground level, spinning in a tackle before the handball just dropped — one of those moments where the skill was there but the execution fell slightly short under maximum pressure.

She held her width well at half-forward, thumping a handball receive into a contest inside 50 rather than drifting into stoppages unnecessarily. A quick kick while being dragged down from half-back and a clearance to the wing that worked out for a teammate kept her contributions ticking, before she took a heavy knock at the 15.5-minute mark, crunched in a tackle just inside 50 but getting up to continue.
Then came the highlight.

At the 17-minute mark, Cocks dropped a mark but the ball was right there – she picked it up, spun, and slammed a goal home off one step to push Norwood’s lead to 24-13. It was a classy, composed finish from a bottom-ager, executed under pressure without a second’s hesitation. She closed the half by finding Amy Gaedtke inside 50 from a gather, Gaedtke narrowly missing from the deck for a behind. Cocks had notched up 12 disposals to half-time in a busy first half, and going toe-for-toe with Fielder the whole way.

THIRD QUARTER

The third quarter was Cocks’ quietest – just four disposals for the term – though her involvement around stoppages was still consistent even when the ball wasn’t finding her cleanly. She was busy around the contest without winning it as regularly, had a fierce bump over the line in attack that she wasn’t pleased with, and showed quick hands at the 10-minute mark to shuffle the ball out of a congested half-forward contest.

She came off for a rest and returned in a forward role, taking a clean handball off a ruck tap and then laying a tackle shortly after – small contributions that kept her in the game even when her disposal count was a little lower.

FOURTH QUARTER

Cocks was back on-ball against Fielder from the opening bounce and immediately showed what she was about – bursting from a stoppage on the defensive side of the centre in the opening 30 seconds and kicking long down the ground to set up an attack. She won a contested ball at the five-minute mark, tackled but getting it out, then cleared again moments later.

She provided a showcase of her football smarts early in the term too. A well-positioned mark on the wing was followed by a kick into the corridor, before a sequence where she got a handball away while being slung to the ground, won a free kick, feigned a handball to create space, burst forward when pushed late, then dished off again at half-forward. All in the space of 30 seconds.

The clearance in the 11th minute mark ended with a long kick to half-back, and she immediately hunted down her opponent to produce a brilliant smother and force the ball out of play – the sort of defensive act that stops the clock and shifts momentum. She was still finding the ball in the final two minutes, finishing with a handball receive and a long kick inside 50 as the last act of her afternoon.

SUMMARY

Lani Cocks is one of the most naturally gifted footballers running around, and relocating from the country to give her development a massive boost is already a huge plus for the talented bottom-ager. It is easy to draw comparisons to Shineah Goody – not just for the travel factor but her on-field abilities – with Cocks such a brilliant all-round player.

Picking holes in Cocks’ game is like what it was with Goody. She could build some more strength – but it doesn’t hamper her because she is so quick to get to the right spots and win the ball – and could add more explosiveness to her game – but is not slow, and has a nice burst, but can get even quicker. The latter again is not a major factor because of her reading of the play off hands, she often leaves her opponent trailing behind because she’s had the split second head start through those footy smarts.

If you’re listing off all of Cocks’ strengths then you would be there all day, but her footy IQ, ability to go in hard, win the ball, or work to the outside and find it in space is very good. She compliments the Norwood midfield so well, and no doubt like Goody, will likely attract attention from opposition taggers over the course of the next couple of SANFLW seasons. A bonafide star in the making.

Mentions

Lani Cocks

LANI Cocks is only in her first full SANFLW season – after making a senior debut late last year – but the Norwood midfielder is already playing with a maturity and competitive edge that belies her age.
