She earned a free kick through defensive harassment in the first term and was generally composed under pressure, showing good hands when the ball came her way. Carlton got her chance in the middle as well, but her best chance was when she had space in front of her to utilise her run and carry.

#7 Layla May
Midfielder/Wing | 159cm | 14/05/2009

Stats: 20 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 1 clearance, 1 inside 50, 2 rebound 50s

The bottom-ager showed good instincts on the spread, often reading the play well and both intercepting passes between the arcs, and breaking through tackles to get the ball away on multiple occasions. Her vision to kick to space in the first term showed her awareness of the game around her, and she did well to lock the ball up against two opponents in the third term. May has a real crack for a smaller player and has that inside-outside balance.

#8 Peggy Rock
Midfielder/Forward | 166cm | 20/07/2009

Stats: 18 disposals, 1 mark, 5 tackles, 4 clearances, 3 inside 50s

Rock was the NT’s most dynamic player and her best moment was a moment of genuine class – a perfectly weighted kick off the left foot from the boundary line to set up a goal, showing the vision and execution that has made her one of the competition’s more watchable bottom-age prospects regardless of which team she is representing. Her sideways movement in traffic and clean hands through congestion in the second term were further highlights, and her four clearances reflected consistent on-ball impact throughout. She threw it on the boot on a couple of occasions and was tackled immediately on the wing at times, but the tools are undeniable.

#15 Grace Anstess
Defender/Midfielder | 175cm | 10/05/2010

Stats: 27 disposals, 7 marks, 5 tackles, 1 hitout, 3 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 5 rebound 50s

Tied to the Sandringham Dragons in the Talent League Girls, Anstess racked up the ball with ease starting in defence then rotating into the midfield latr in the match. She looms as a start of the future, only turning 16 on Sunday, and is coming off an impressive Under 16s national carnival. She was a smooth mover out of defence throughout, providing consistent rebound and pushing up the ground to offer as a wing option. Her contested marking was a feature, and she showed her coverage of the ground by spending time across multiple zones across the game. A name to keep a very close eye on.

BENDIGO PIONEERS:

#6 Sage Dennis
Forward/Midfielder | 161cm | 22/08/2009

Stats: 24 disposals, 6 marks, 6 tackles, 5 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

The bottom-ager was one of Bendigo’s best contributors getting some serious midfield minutes after starting forward. Her short passing was a consistent strength, opening up the game with sharp 45-degree passes that kept the Pioneers moving, and her aerial work both in defence and forward positions was reliable. A fantastic tackle in the third term to force a turnover was her best individual pressure act, and she remained dangerous across all four quarters. A strong showing from a player who will only improve as the season goes on.

#8 Georgia Garlick
Defender | 170cm | 01/07/2008

Stats: 28 disposals, 6 marks, 7 tackles, 5 clearances, 1 inside 50, 5 rebound 50s

Garlick was outstanding and arguably her side’s best, using the ball effectively from the back half and providing some vital run and carry down the ground. Her ball use was sublime throughout, with her short 45-degree passes a consistent weapon that kept the Pioneers moving cleanly out of defence. A spin and handball in the first term was one of the cleanest pieces of skill on show, and a second-effort sequence in the second term – caught holding the ball, immediately following up to tackle and win the free kick back – showed her competitive character. She also snuck forward in the third term and nearly snapped a goal off her preferred left foot. One of the most well-rounded defensive performances of the season so far.

#9 Beth Morris
Midfielder | 167cm | 04/09/2008

Stats: 17 disposals, 5 marks, 3 tackles, 3 clearances, 5 inside 50s

Morris drove the ball inside 50 on five occasions and was a consistent aerial presence on the wing throughout, showing strong hands in the air on multiple occasions. Her disposal can let her down at times, with Morris generally a good decision maker, but needing to improve the pinpoint accuracy – such as kicking between players which opens the door for turnovers. But her composure at half-back and through the corridor kept Bendigo moving and she never backs down from a contest.

#12 Issy Boulton
Midfielder | 150cm | 21/11/2007

Stats: 27 disposals, 3 marks, 8 tackles, 4 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 3 goals, 2 behinds

The over-ager was Bendigo’s match-winner – three goals from 27 disposals and eight tackles is an extraordinary all-round return that reflected a player doing everything. Her first goal came from pure persistence, winning the ball again at the top of the goalsquare after her initial snap didn’t connect. Her second was a dribbled finish off the outside of the boot. Her third was the goal of the game threading the needle from the boundary line in the 15th minute of the third term in a moment of individual brilliance. Eight tackles alongside that scoring output reflects a player who competes hard at both ends, and a smother near the final siren to force the ball to be locked up was a fitting way to cap her day. Was the star offensive performer of the day.

#14 Lacey Nihill
Wing/Midfielder | 172cm | 01/05/2008

Stats: 26 disposals, 6 marks, 5 tackles, 2 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s

Nihill was again excellent in a versatile role, starting on the wing before rotating through the midfield as the game demanded. Her intercept marking was a feature – three clean grabs cross the game – and she continued to work hard and pressure the opponent at ground level too. Nihill can tend to give away free kicks for her attack on the ball, but can frustrate opponents and win them back herself. Though he has been a first-choice onballer this season, she got to go back on a wing – which she has played in the past – for three quarters and got to use her run a little more, as well as have more time and space for her disposal.. Continues to build one of the more consistent top-age campaigns in the competition.

Mentions

Northern Territory vs Bendigo Pioneers

BENDIGO Pioneers claimed their first win of the season in Darwin, overcoming the Northern Territory Academy 6.7 (43) to 3.4 (22) in Round 5 of the Talent League Girls – the NT’s first game of the competition.
