He not only tracked the play on his side of the field, but was consistently a switch option on the open side where he could drive his legs and get moving in transition. Hanrahan’s speed and sharp disposal made for effective combination play on the outside, giving flow to the Jets’ ball movement.

#2 Khaled El Souki (Western Bulldogs NGA)
Small Forward/Midfielder | 175cm | 04/07/2008

Stats: 29 disposals, 6 tackles, 5 inside 50s, 6 goals

El Souki took out Player of the Week honours for his utterly dominant forward-half display. The Bulldogs NGA prospect swooped on ground balls, was evasive, and showed excellent foot skills to match his vision. He kicked six goals himself but was unselfish across the top of forward 50, often looking inboard to find teammates in better positions and creating a ridiculous amount of scores. El Souki filled his boots with some midfield minutes but was most effective in attack, particularly early on where his goal contributions stopped the rot after Calder kicked the game’s first four majors. He was dangerous with every touch and proved he could split the big sticks from anywhere. Clinical.

#7 Angus Tippett
Midfielder | 194cm | 12/02/2008

Stats: 22 disposals, 5 tackles, 5 clearances, 5 inside 50s

It is easy to pigeonhole 194cm onballers, but Tippett has worked hard to prove he is more than just a stoppage midfielder. He fulfilled his duties on the inside where his size and clean hands helped release outside runners, before spreading hard to continue racking up possessions. While he could be more damaging with ball in hand, Tippett showed moments of poise and was able to find space on account of his work rate. Even when he was pressured, he had the strength to stand and deliver.

#9 Lachlan Hicks
Midfielder/Forward | 183cm | 19/01/2008

Stats: 20 disposals, 9 marks, 5 inside 50s, 2 goals

Another of Western’s industrious midfielders, Hicks’ running power was on show as he transitioned away from the contest. He racked up nine marks, displaying his aerial prowess and courage with a few attempts but also finding plenty of space around the ground. One of Hicks’ best grabs came in a forward 50 pack, resulting in his second goal, and he even dropped back to snare an intercept. The top-ager fought hard in-and-under and was a threat when rotating forward, but perhaps could have been a little more consistent with his kicking on the move – just lacking that polish at times.

#10 Griffin Barker
Wing/Midfielder | 186cm | 13/08/2009

Stats: 16 disposals, 2 clearances, 1 goal

Barker has had his magnet shuffled this year as top-agers take precedent in midfield, but he managed to find his share of possessions out on the wing. Not afraid to fold in on the contest, Barker showed strong ball-winning instincts and was hard to push off the loose ball. He positioned well to provide support off the stoppage and was powerful with ball in hand, driving his legs to burst into space or absorbing tackle pressure through the core. Like Hicks, Barker’s field kicking was a little scrappy but he snuck forward to slot a set shot goal in term three, and got a brief run on-ball.

#17 Billy Wigmore
Tall Defender | 188cm | 29/03/2008

Stats: 25 disposals, 5 marks, 7 rebound 50s

Back in arguably his most natural position behind the ball, Wigmore was near-on impassable. He read the play beautifully and acted quickly to either position himself in packs down the line, or peel off to intercept. Usually incredibly strong overhead as a mid-sized type who plays tall, Wigmore clunked five marks but got his hands to the ball at many more aerial contests. The top-ager was also composed with ball in hand, stepping around tackles and firing off passes under immense physical pressure. He played with confidence and showed some playmaking ability on the rebound.

Sam Harris kicks on the run | Image Credit: Craig Dooley/AFL Photos

CALDER CANNONS:

#2 Sam Harris (North Melbourne F/S)
Midfielder/Forward | 180cm | 17/01/2008

Stats: 19 disposals, 5 marks, 5 clearances, 5 inside 50s

Harris typically plays at a high intensity and got to show his quick feet coming out of the contest. The North Melbourne father-son candidate darted and spun out of congestion nicely, leaning on his clean handling to manufacture combination play on the way forward. His short and sharp possessions caught the eye, albeit with some errant kicks to finish off.

#3 Nathaniel Jenkins
Key Forward | 196cm | 18/08/2009

Stats: 13 disposals, 3 marks, 1 goal

While not yet the final product, there are plenty of traits which point towards Jenkins’ upside. Namely, his athleticism is a quality which opens up his scoring avenues, albeit only for a single free kick goal on Sunday. The bottom-ager worked up the ground and was nimble enough to swoop on loose balls, which was handy given some of the delivery on offer. With ball in hand, he evaded opponents like a much smaller player and showed great speed to bring the ball forward. He was clever and flashy in tight spaces, flicking out creative handballs under pressure to keep the ball moving into space. In open play, he ran hard to get on the end of possession chains and launch inside 50, while showing sharp foot skills around the ground. The bottom-ager even dropped back to reel in a couple of intercept marks, and as he usually does, got forward to convert a free kick in term three.

#10 Isa Merhi
Small Defender | 177cm | 14/05/2009

Stats: 19 disposals, 2 marks, 6 tackles

Merhi assumed his usual playmaking role across half-back, racking up possessions deep inside defensive 50 and high up the ground.
