She opened her account with a slick handball receive that she slammed home from 20 metres – a reward for sharp forward instinct – and was a consistent threat whenever the ball arrived at her feet. A strong contested clunk in the seventh minute of the third term had her in a strong position, but the set shot from the tight pocket angle drifted right. She was denied another chance a little later on in the same term when a lovely sidestep around the pocket left her with a 20-metre shot that went to the left. The quality of her leading and marking ability in attack is clear, and the goal-kicking will sharpen as the season goes on.

#14 Maya Fuller (Wing)

Stats: 9 disposals, 7 tackles, 2 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

The numbers don’t shout but they tell the real story – seven tackles from nine disposals is a return that reflects a player whose defensive pressure was relentless from first bounce to last. Fuller held her line on the wing with discipline, tracking back into defence when the Eagles had the ball and surging forward with purpose when North had it. The clearance work and three inside 50s added a genuine offensive dimension. A quiet accumulator who made her presence felt in a different way.

#35 Caitlin Hardin (Midfielder/Forward)

Stats: 15 disposals, 6 tackles, 5 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

Hardin was competitive and forceful through the stoppages all day, winning the first centre clearance and driving it inside 50 to open proceedings. She was used across multiple roles – starting on-ball, spending time forward, always finding the contest regardless of where she was stationed – and her work at the centre stoppages – particularly to start the first and third terms was eye-catching. Her most excruciating moment came in the final term when she gathered one-on-one in the forward pocket, spinning into a checkside attempt, only to strike the post when a goal would have cut the margin to five points. The work rate and contested ability continue to be hallmarks.

WOODVILLE-WEST TORRENS:

#4 Julia Faulkner (Forward/Midfielder)

Stats: 18 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 2 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

Faulkner’s busiest game by disposal count this season, and the variety of ways she influenced the contest was a feature throughout. Her intercept mark at half-forward in the second term – read brilliantly and converted with a well-weighted kick inboard – was her cleanest individual passage, and a brilliant half-volley gather on the forward side of the wing late in the same term, hands remaining clean as she was tackled, was the kind of elite skill execution that defines her game. She rotated on and off the ball throughout the match and was particularly busy in the final term – winning multiple possessions in close, showing quick extraction by hand from the stoppage and doing the small things to lock the ball up on the wing in a tight finish. Always makes her touches count.

#7 Maia Freemantle (Midfielder)

Stats: 9 disposals, 6 tackles, 2 clearances, 1 rebound 50

A tougher afternoon by the numbers for Freemantle, but the competitiveness was there from the opening minutes, winning her first free kick early in the second term for being held. She matched up against Hardin through the middle and competed hard before being moved to the wing against Fuller in the third term. An unfortunate moment came in the third when she was pinged for holding the ball trying to burst away from traffic – the kind of situation her strength should allow her to negotiate more cleanly as the season develops. Came off midway through the same quarter after a hard knock and sat the rest of the game. One to watch as she builds her way back into top form.

#15 Lucy Moore (Midfielder)

Stats: 17 disposals, 7 tackles, 6 clearances, 1 inside 50, 1 goal

Another fierce performance from Moore, whose combination of clean hands and relentless defensive output remains the defining feature of her season. Her goal at the 11-minute mark of the second term was a thing of beauty – a great gather, a snap off the ground and the ball bouncing home in an open goalsquare – and summed up the composure that runs through her game. Her inside game and defensive pressure was elite once again, and her lightning quick handball extractions from the centre were consistently clean across all four terms. One of the best inside midfielders in the competition.

#36 Ruby Lynch (Midfielder/Forward)

Stats: 12 disposals, 2 marks (1 contested), 2 tackles, 1 clearance, 2 behinds

A frustrating day in front of goal for Lynch, who created plenty of chances but couldn’t fully capitalise. She marked inside 50 at the fifth minute mark of the second term only to miss the set shot to the left, and launched a big set shot from 40 metres a few minutes that that drifted right under pressure. When she pushed on-ball midway through the quarter, her clean hands off the wing added another dimension, and she showed her athleticism when tracking effectively at half-back in the third term. The talent and upside are clear – the conversion will come.

Team

Norwood

West Adelaide

NORWOOD:

#8 Lani Cocks (Midfielder)

Stats: 36 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 7 clearances, 8 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s, 1 goal

The most extraordinary individual performance of the round. Cocks was simply unstoppable across four quarters and built on an already brilliant CV. Her goal in the third term was the moment of the day: taking three bounces after winning the ball up forward, launching from distance and watching the ball bounce through – a finish that showed the composure of an elite player. Earlier in the second term she showed her instinct going the other way, pouncing on an errant disposal, pushing forward and handing off to Ashley Baker for a goal with one clean movement. The moments of brilliance kept coming – an intercepted pass to Jade Halfpenny in the final term was perfectly weighted; and a low handball standing up in the tackle on the wing was textbook footy IQ. One of the best players in next year’s AFLW Draft, and Round 4 was another compelling exhibit of exactly why.

#14 Kate Alexander (Ruck)

Stats: 9 disposals, 1 mark, 3 tackles, 24 hitouts, 3 clearances, 1 inside 50

Alexander dominated the ruck contest in what was arguably her best performance of the year. She won 24 hitouts with clean, decisive positioning throughout. Her tap work was at its best when winning clean first possession – a great tap down in the second term followed by a second-effort clean kick on the 45 was her standout individual passage – and she contributed with three clearances to complement the hitout return, reflecting genuine follow-up work after her own taps. She gave away a couple of free kicks in marking contests with late holds, and was run down in the first term by Emily Mableson after taking a mark at centre half-back, but her overall ruck craft was sound. Quietly building a solid season.

#18 Charlee Brooksby (Wing)

Stats: 18 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 3 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s

An industrious performance from Brooksby on the wing, particularly in the first half when she racked up 11 disposals. Her best individual moment came two minutes into the second term with a long kick to the hotspot that set up Elle Lineage for a goal, the kind of penetrating left-foot delivery she produces consistently. A couple of uncharacteristic skill errors crept in – two kicks out on the full under pressure – and some decision-making in the third term felt a touch rushed, but the work ethic and ground coverage were consistent throughout.

#21 Elke Cameron (Midfielder)

Stats: 12 disposals, 1 mark, 9 tackles, 1 inside 50

Cameron was deployed predominantly through the middle but also up forward and made her most important contribution count early – a brilliant snap at the 18-minute mark in the first term was a genuine piece of forward skill, the kind of finish that rewards the off-ball pressure she constantly provides. Nine tackles from 12 disposals tells you where her energy went, and her willingness to chase and compete without the ball was evident throughout. Her third-term stint on-ball saw her match up directly on Mableson, a tough assignment she approached with characteristic commitment.

#36 Ella Anderson (Defender)

Stats: 16 disposals, 5 marks (1 contested), 1 tackle, 1 clearance, 2 inside 50s, 5 rebound 50s

An impressive SANFLW debut. Anderson looked composed and assured from the opening minutes, taking on the kickout duties early – always a positive sign in a first senior game – and delivering cleanly when given the opportunity. She took several clean intercept marks and showed consistency across all four quarters in mopping up and transitioning from defence. A couple of moments early where she was beaten in the air or lost the ball in traffic were understandable for a first appearance, but the overall picture was encouraging. A player to watch as she builds experience at senior level.

WEST ADELAIDE:

#4 Emily Mableson (Midfielder)

Stats: 26 disposals, 2 marks, 18 tackles, 5 clearances, 7 inside 50s, 7 rebound 50s, 1 behind

Mableson produced her most damaging performance of the season, laying 18 tackles of which each one was delivered every one with the relentless intensity that makes her one of the most valuable young midfielders in the competition. From the first bounce – laying the game’s opening tackle in the middle – to the final minutes, she never stopped competing. Her third-term sequence early was the microcosm of her day: receiving the tap, finding a teammate at half-forward and then receiving the ball back by hand just outside 50 and nailing an elite pass through to Jemma Ellis 15 metres out who converted. Her all-round output – seven inside 50s and seven rebound 50s from the one game – tells the story of a player who covers every inch of the ground. The National Academy member’s ceiling remains extraordinary.

#24 Chelsea Newitt (Forward)

Stats: 11 disposals, 2 tackles, 1 inside 50, 1 behind

A quieter afternoon for Newitt by her recent standards, with clean moments mixed with a couple of near-misses. A strong tackle in the attacking 50 to lock the ball up in the first term and a great gather off the bounce at half-forward showed her typical two-way energy, but each time she won the ball she was under immense pressure and finished with one behind and a couple of half-chances that went begging. Still competitive and dangerous when the ball came her way.

Lani Cocks was sensational in Norwood’s win over West Adelaide. Her tap work was clean and purposeful from the opening bounce, and the six inside 50s generated from her ruck work reflect the directness with which she targets the forward half. A brilliant holding-the-ball tackle on Isla Wiencke at half-forward in the first term won a free kick, and her trademark defensive rotations were again a consistent feature. She copped a high knock late in the second term but got up to continue, and finished the game still generating clean tap work in the fourth. A reliable ruck asset for the Bulldogs each week.

#9 Charlotte Maurits (Forward)

Stats: 10 disposals, 5 marks, 1 tackle, 1 inside 50, 1 rebound 50

Maurits had her work cut out at times against stronger opponents but continued to compete with the tenacity that defines her play. She kept finding space and presenting well even on a day when her direct attacking opportunities were limited and she was clean whenever she got the ball. A quieter afternoon that still had quality in the details.

#15 Olivia Leslie (Defender)

Stats: 21 disposals, 7 marks (1 contested), 2 tackles, 1 clearance, 2 rebound 50s

Leslie produced another brilliant performance to further cement her place as a bottom-ager to watch for next season. The quality of her intercept reading was what stood out most – she took multiple intercept marks through the middle in the third term and was an attacking menace all day, driving cleanly down the ground and switching play with confidence. Her contested grab under heavy contact in the second term was her most impressive aerial moment, and a sharp smother in the third term to bring the ball to ground showed her defensive competitiveness. Leslie is developing into one of the more complete defensive prospects in the competition.

#18 Demi Holloway (Forward/Midfielder)

Stats: 5 disposals, 1 tackle, 1 inside 50

Limited time with the ball across the day, but Holloway’s contributions were purposeful when they came – a strong tackle on the wing to lock the ball up in the third term and a clean handball release out of congestion in the middle reflected the football smarts she consistently brings. Her rotations between forward and midfield showed her versatility, and a handball receive kicked inboard in the first term showed the instinct around goal that’s been evident all season.

#19 Amalia Musolino (Defender)

Stats: 6 disposals, 1 mark, 1 rebound 50

A composed performance on debut, Musolino’s clean intercept mark at centre half-back and clean delivery to a teammate in the first term was the highlight – a tidy moment that reflected the calm under pressure she brings when stationed back. She worked hard in the defensive 50 in the third term to lock the ball up and her clearance kick down the ground was well-placed. Doing the quiet defensive work that kept her side safe.

#21 Izabella Nisbet (Midfielder)

Stats: 11 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 1 clearance

Another debutant for the Doggies, Nisbet worked effectively across multiple roles, coming off the bench to rotate on-ball and producing some of the cleanest individual skill moments in Central District’s midfield. Very clean hands off the deck and a lovely delivery to a teammate at centre half-forward were early highlights, and a great strong tackle deep inside 50 in the second term was her most impactful defensive act. A free kick for being taken high on the wing in the third term, followed by a well-weighted kick to half-forward, was her best individual passage. Continues to build confidence in the senior game.

GLENELG:

#6 Georgie Fielder (Midfielder)

Stats: 23 disposals, 1 mark, 2 tackles, 1 inside 50, 2 rebound 50s, 1 behind

Fielder continued her prolific season with another 20-plus disposal performance, racking up nine touches in the first term alone and consistently providing a clean option around the ball. Her quick dish-off work at half-back was a recurring feature – getting the ball away under pressure and finding space efficiently – and a third-term burst down the wing that finished with a kick forward to advantage was her best attacking moment. The one significant miss came early in the first term when she ran into an open goal from 15 metres and pushed it to the right, which will sting given how competitive the match was. Still an elite accumulator and one of the best young midfielders in South Australia.

#16 Maya Vonarx (Forward/Midfielder)

Stats: 5 disposals, 1 mark (1 contested), 3 tackles, 2 clearances, 3 inside 50s

An encouraging debut performance from Vonarx, who showed good courage in competing for the ball in the air against strong opponents and had her best moment in the third term when she moved on-ball and won the clearance that set up a Kiana Lee goal. Three inside 50s from five disposals reflects her ability to make an impact beyond her disposal count – when she gets the ball, she drives it forward with intent. One to watch as she develops.

#32 Tori Evans (Defender)

Stats: 12 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 1 clearance, 1 inside 50, 3 rebound 50s

Evans delivered a solid performance in defence, producing a standout moment in the final term when she won a free kick against Shelby Smith in the defensive goalsquare and cleared confidently. Her second-term free kick at half-back, which was followed by a nice delivery to Lee, was her cleanest attacking contribution, and she provided consistent defensive work across all four quarters. Continuing to build the defensive credentials that have been a steady feature of her season.

Team

South Adelaide

Sturt

SOUTH ADELAIDE:

#8 Hope Taylor (Forward)

Stats: 7 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 1 inside 50, 2 goals

Taylor was at her most complete this season – covering ground from forward to half-back and back, and ultimately delivering the match-winner. Her first goal was a classy snap across the body from a handball receive in the second term, the finish of a player who sees the opportunity before others do. She worked relentlessly across the ground throughout – laying four tackles and covering more territory than her forward role typically demands. The payoff came in the final minute of the game – running ridiculously hard forward to take a mark and slotting the goal from 25 metres with the last kick, a finish that captured everything that makes her such an exciting prospect.

#20 Layla Vizgaudis (Midfielder)

Stats: 29 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 9 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 4 rebound 50s, 2 goals

An elite performance from Vizgaudis, whose nine clearances was her best effort of the year. She opened her account in the third minute, marking inside 50 after sneaking forward and calmly slotted the set shot. Accumulated throughout the contest and was clearly best afield in the win. The late clearance at the 18-minute mark of the final term that set up the chain to Taylor for the match-winner was the perfect way to cap the performance. As good as any midfielder in the competition right now.

>> Player Focus: Layla Vizgaudis (South Adelaide)

#25 Emma Charlton (Midfielder)

Stats: 16 disposals, 1 mark, 4 tackles, 10 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

A performance full of intensity and craft. Charlton’s 10 clearances was outstanding in its own right, but what stood out was the desperation she brought to every contest – attempted smothers, strong tackles and quick handball releases under pressure that reflect a player who competes at the absolute maximum. Her second-term sequence was her best passage – elite clean hands bursting through the stoppage, a brilliant handball, then a quick give-off to set up a Taylor goal early in the quarter. She was monitored carefully by opponents who often swarmed her at stoppages. While she has had bigger disposal tallies, her inside game was elite.

#60 Marley Tape (Defender)

Stats: 10 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 2 inside 50s

Another tidy contribution from Tape, whose clean skills and composure in the back half continue to impress. Her second term was the most impressive, intercept making on a number of occasions and delivering neat, sharp passes forward playing within her means. A run-down tackle in the back pocket in the third term to save a goal was her most impactful defensive act, though Madeline Nuss levelled the ledger by winning a free kick and converting shortly after.

STURT:

#7 Lily Whiteman (Forward/Midfielder)

Stats: 12 disposals, 1 mark, 3 tackles, 1 clearance, 3 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

Whiteman is known for her class, but her defensive work continued to be her calling card with a bone-crunching tackle in the middle in the first term earning her a free kick and set up a scoring chain. She always looked to push forward and create, and her mid-third-term handball receive followed by a spin and kick through advantage at half-forward was her cleanest individual skill moment. Still developing the full package but the defensive intensity and creativity forward or centre are evident traits in her game.

#21 Skout Young (Forward/Midfielder)

Stats: 7 disposals, 1 mark, 5 tackles, 3 clearances, 1 inside 50, 1 rebound 50, 1 behind

Young drifted from the forwardline into midfield and found the contest regardless of where she was stationed, with five tackles reflecting genuine pressure acts across all four terms. Not a huge day out by any means, but her defensive pressure was fantastic, adding a different look around the stoppages as the Double Blues were storming back into the contest, and her intercept mark in the fourth term on the wing was important.

#36 Madeline Nuss (Forward)

Stats: 7 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 1 inside 50, 2 goals, 1 behind

Nuss delivered two goals that made it a genuine contest, and both were vintage forward finishes. The first, nine minutes into the third term, came after winning a free kick with a strong tackle on Tape – a composed set shot from 25 metres that she slotted cleanly. The second was even better: a brilliant pickup off the deck at 13 minutes of the final term, a burst away and a point-blank finish that reflected the natural goal-sense she has shown all season. Has six goals from four games this season, all of which came from two-goal matches.

Mentions

North Adelaide vs Woodville-West Torrens

Norwood vs West Adelaide

Central District vs Glenelg

South Adelaide vs Sturt

ROUND 4 of the SANFLW produced another absorbing weekend of action as the competition’s State Academy contingent continued to press their cases ahead of the league-wide bye.
