The Stingrays actually lead by seven points with seven minutes to play before Majella Day took advantage of a 50m penalty call to deliver from long-range and then draw the scores level in the final two minutes. Despite the ball ending up in Dandenong’s forward 50 as the siren sounded, the Stingrays settled for the two points.

In what was an even contest, there were plenty of players who caught the eye with valuable contributions.

Team

Dandenong Stingrays

GIANTS Academy

DANDENONG STINGRAYS:

#1 Sophie White
Ruck/Defender | 184cm | 18/03/2008

Stats: 10 disposals, 1 mark, 3 tackles, 24 hitouts, 1 clearance, 3 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

Simply dominated from start to finish when in the ruck with her leap – and extra centimetres – over her opponents, leading to getting first hands to it nearly each and every time. She has the raw athleticism and ruck craft that naturally catches the eye, and while her fundamentals are still building, showed she has the ability to roll back into defence when required and be an intercepting target when the Giants Academy had the wind. Combined with Zach all day, and had a textbook tap to Whitten for the Stingrays’ first goal of the day three minutes into the second term.

#2 Molly Reimers
Utility | 169cm | 25/07/2007

Stats: 19 disposals, 2 marks, 9 tackles, 4 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 goal, 2 behinds

Reimers has truly become a ‘fix it’ player, with the natural forward moving on-ball and then also spending time in the back half when the Stingrays were under the pump. She only took the two marks, but is known for her aerial presence, even winning a couple of clearances when she went into the middle to start the third term. Her goal came from long-range late in the second term, and her defensive pressure in particular was very strong.

#3 Scarlett Marsh
Midfielder/Defender | 162cm | 03/04/2008

Stats: 16 disposals, 1 mark, 3 tackles, 5 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

Though Marsh has had better games this season, she still played her role and had some nice touches forward of centre and then late in the game where the Stingrays needed her composure. She worked well on-ball to feed it out to her teammates, whilst reading the play effectively in transition to help the defence. Marsh’s best play came in the third term when she spun out of two tacklers dished off, won it back then put it on a platter for Clish who duly saluted.

#5 Gabrielle Mehrmann
Key Defender | 180cm | 11/09/2008

Stats: 9 disposals, 4 marks, 1 tackle, 3 rebound 50s

Mehrmann does not shy away from the big jobs, and few come bigger than Day, whom the Stingrays tall did not start on, but after the tall had kicked an early one and looked dangerous, moved onto her. While Day has her once in front on the lead, Mehrmann was often spotted hanging off her, not willing to give her an inch. She took a terrific one-on-one mark in the first term using her body well, and was enormous in the fourth term, clunking several intercept marks and defending bravely. Made a few errors by foot in the breeze, but overall was tireless in working the ball from danger.

#10 Evi Irving
Midfielder | 167cm | 18/12/2008

Stats: 15 disposals, 2 marks, 5 tackles, 1 clearance, 5 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

Irving had some neat highlights throughout the game, including a potential goal-saving tackle on the much bigger Annabelle McHale in the second term, and winning the first centre clearance of the third quarter. Though not a huge clearance player when inside, Irving provides some nice dash downfield, and is a highly offensive-running player while still having defensive instincts which come from her time as a two-way running winger.

#11 Lily Brittain
Forward/Wing | 161cm | 26/01/2009

Stats: 15 disposals, 7 tackles, 1 clearance, 3 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s

While she did not get the midfield minutes she has in past weeks, Brittain applied the same amount of pressure in a forward/wing role working up and down the ground and using her athletic gifts to break lines and attack ferociously. Her defensive pressure was elite, and she is quick to dispose of the ball the bulk of the time, usually looking to kick long and direct downfield. Her balance is terrific, and while still light, she packs a punch and is almost always used in link-up plays between the arcs.

#12 Zoe Zach
Midfielder | 165cm | 09/12/2008

Stats: 20 disposals, 1 mark, 3 tackles, 7 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

A coming of age for Zach after a busy game the week before, as the former defender is now a bonafide midfielder. Her centre clearance work in particular caught the eye, often getting first hands to it and feeding it out to teammates, or roaming around the back, connecting off White’s palmdown and clearing the ball to space. That composure under pressure can still develop, but her hands are clean, even when tackled or under immense heat, and she can quickly dish off well. In a competition where players lean towards showing off their own traits, Black is a team-first player, always eyeing off teammates in better positions, or dishing off to the runner if she does not think she can execute effectively from her position. Kicked a brilliant snap goal to put her team in front to start the fourth term, and had two more chances from long-range after that in the final five minutes, but both just fell short.

#14 Annie Clish
Forward | 170cm | 25/05/2009

Stats: 8 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 2 goals

With her forward craft at an 11/10, Clish has the potential to provide plenty of sleepless nights for opponents anytime she goes near the pill. While not having a stack of opportunities, the bottom-ager only needs a split second, with her goal midway through the third term a perfect play. She gathered on the boundary, looked to be corralled and then pulled off a ridiculous sidestep in the blink of an eye before nailing the checkside from the tightest of angles. That was her second major after a straightforward close-range goal, and aside from one shot that just fell short, constantly looked dangerous inside 50.

#25 Jasmine Whitten
Forward | 160cm | 16/02/2008

Stats: 18 disposals, 5 tackles, 1 clearance, 3 inside 50s, 1 goal, 2 behinds

The top-ager’s performance was worth a mention because she played a key role linking up between midfield and attack, often coming out to win the ball and feeding it out to teammates or kicking into dangerous spots. While not completely polished all the time, Whitten showed class reading the tap from White inside 50 early in the second term to rove the ball and slam home a goal to get her team up and about. Had a couple more chances that just missed, while setting up Hannah Griffiths with a key goal in the third term.

#26 Ella Bologa
Defender | 161cm | 10/09/2009

Stats: 14 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 2 inside 50s, 6 rebound 50s

Boasting composure and smarts beyond her years, Bologa fills the role left by Marsh’s move into the midfield. While the latter has spent most late games beside her, the bottom-ager has stepped up to be that relieving option out of the back half, using the ball efficiently – and even potently at times – to find targets downfield. Bologa looks safe with ball in hand, and is not afraid to bite off the corridor kick if it’s there, and she competes strongly in the air for her size.

#45 Amelia Hamod
Forward/Ruck | 186cm | 03/09/2009

Stats: 12 disposals, 6 marks, 2 tackles, 14 hitouts, 1 clearnace, 5i nside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 1 behind

A towering presence around the ground, as soon as Hamod got front position, it was all over for the Giants Academy who had to hope she dropped the ball or the umpire did not pick up the incoming infringement. She played predominantly forward but also rotated into the ruck, with a nice leap, and good hands that were reliable more than anything. A left-footer, Hamod is still ironing out some fundamentals, but looks a high-upside, long-term prospect.

GIANTS ACADEMY:

#1 Isla Judd
Wing/Defender | 166cm | 12/10/2008

Stats: 14 disposals, 1 mark, 6 tackles, 2 inside 50s, 5 rebound 50s

Judd has strung together a couple of good weeks with the Giants Academy and finished off her Talent League Girls campaign with a great defensive performance as well as some nice touches forward of centre. The top-ager’s tackling and work rate were on display, saving a likely goal from Lily Brittain in the defensive 50. Judd does have some tricks up her sleeve as well, selling some candy and effectively dishing off at half-back in the third term, then hitting a nice pass inside 50 in the fourth quarter.

#12 Ariella Paterson
Wing | 170cm | 22/11/2008

Stats: 16 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 1 inside 50, 1 rebound 50, 1 goal

Getting it done at both ends, Paterson is not always a high-possession winner, but she can have some serious impact with ball in hand. Her first notable touch was a goal, getting deep inside 50 to the right spot where she slammed home an early major thanks to her work rate. She applied pressure in the defensive half, covering the ground well, then set up Day with a couple of brilliant passes inside 50. That latter goal came with some crafty smarts when O’Sullivan won a 50m penalty and should have been the recipient of the kick for goal, but instead Day raced over and picked up the ball, waving off her teammate. She went back and delivered from long-range to cut the deficit to just one point, then marked on the tightest of angles in the dying minutes to take a shot from the boundary. Her attempt hit the post, which made it 4.2 for the day, but meant the Giants came away with the draw.
