In what was a nail-biting contest, the Stingrays dominated forward half possession with 47 inside 50s to 28, and while both sides had 13 scoring shots, Dandenong was the most accurate of the two, kicking 5.8 (38) to 3.10 (28).

We took note of some of the top performers from the Kinetic Stadium clash.

Team

Dandenong Stingrays

Eastern Ranges

DANDENONG STINGRAYS:

#2 Molly Reimers
Midfielder/Forward | 169cm | 25/07/2007

Stats: 19 disposals, 2 marks, 9 tackles, 2 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 2 behinds

The over-ager is enjoying a really strong season for the Stingrays and that continued starting in the middle and rotating forward. Without Zoe Zach in the side – and Geurts back in – Reimers was able to spend more time around the ball, and while not racking up a heap of clearances, she was often involved in transitional plays to get it forward. She almost snapped a great goal from close range in the third term but it bounced into the post. Should have kicked a goal shortly before from 40m but seeing the big sticks with nothing ahead resulted in a rush of blood and miss. Still, Reimers was prominent throughout the game.

#3 Scarlett Marsh
Midfielder/Defender | 162cm | 03/04/2008

Stats: 21 disposals, 5 marks, 7 tackles, 5 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 4 rebound 50s

Played threw quarters on-ball then went into defence for the last as she so often has this season, and perhaps had the most impact of anyone in the dying stages. Her ability to read the ball in flight, intercept or run past for the handball was great, though often she was the settling influence where a defender could hit the short lateral pass and Marsh could be the one to make the ‘go-or-slow’ decision from there. Incredibly had a statless third term before nine touches in the last behind the ball. One such moment in the final term saw the 162cm Marsh outpoint the 179cm Tillie Baldwin with a deft nudge under the ball to intercept mark.

#10 Evi Irving
Midfielder | 167cm | 18/12/2008

Stats: 17 disposals, 3 marks, 6 tackles, 5 clearances, 8 inside 50s

Continued an eye-catching start to 2026 with her adaptability to play across multiple positions, though was honed in on a midfield role in this one. She stepped up to win the clearances that Zach normally would, feeding the ball out and getting it forward, whilst still bringing the defensive pressure without the pill. She took a strong mark in the final term on the wing which was impressive, and she continually worked into dangerous spots to be an option in transition.

#16 Ruby Geurts
Forward | 171cm | 17/09/2008

Stats: 12 disposals, 5 marks, 1 tackle, 1 clearance, 1 inside 50, 1 behind

It was great to see the ultra-talented Geurts back out there again after stepping back from the commitments at the start of the season. She was a little rusty with her range on goal – twice falling just short, albeit against the breeze at Frankston – but her aerial ability and X-factor once the ball hit the ground was undoubted. One of those players who might not have four quarters of impact, but can rip a game away in an instant with a purple patch. For her first game back at the level, and against a quality outfit, she would have been pleased with the effort and especially getting the win.

#25 Jasmine Whitten
Forward | 160cm | 16/02/2008

Stats: 19 disposals, 6 marks, 12 tackles, 1 clearance, 4 inside 50s, 1 behind

For a 160cm player, Whitten is incredibly strong overhead, which is a quality trait for a forward of her size given her defensive pressure is elite. To finish the game with half a dozen marks and a dozen tackles in a game where the pressure was red hot and there was limited space, was terrific. Though not able to trouble the scorers through the big sticks, Whitten has nice vision going inside 50 and has shown enough to suggest she can be a two-way small forward.

#26 Ella Bologa
Defender | 161cm | 10/09/2009

Stats: 25 disposals, 5 marks, 1 tackle, 1 clearance, 1 inside 50, 7 rebound 50s

The bottom-aged Bologa is such a wonderful ball user coming out of the back half, it is a case of just get the pill in her hands and let her go to work. She is only 161cm, but her smarts play a great part in intercepting behind the ball, while often being tasked with the kickouts, or being the first option to go to. When Marsh rolls into defence, it frees Bologa up to play further afield, and she loves to take the game on whenever possible. Finished with a game-high 25 touches, and while she definitely benefited from the raft of Ranges’ behinds, still used the ball at a 76 per cent efficiency and continually drove the ball out of danger for the Stingrays.

#45 Amelia Hamod
Forward/Ruck | 186cm | 03/09/2009

Stats: 15 disposals, 6 marks, 6 tackles, 5 hitouts, 2 clearances, 1 inside 50, 1 goal, 1 behind

When everything clicks, Hamod is going to pose a lot of problems for opposing defences, and she’s already starting to do that. Her aerial ability and sheer size makes her so difficult to outmark or spoil, and the 186cm talent is athletic as well. While her work in the air is what stands out, Hamod’s ability to push up the ground and win the ball on the wing is a great trait as she is not just a stay at home forward waiting for the ball to come to her. Kicked an early goal which combined pressure and forward smarts to force a spill and then soccered it home in the goalsquare, while also continually putting pressure on the Ranges’ back half.

EASTERN RANGES:

#3 Scout Semple
Midfielder/Forward | 162cm | 03/10/2008

Stats: 19 disposals, 1 mark, 7 tackles, 4 clearances, 6 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

The naturally gifted Semple had a mixed bag of a day, starting quietly and having ebbs and flows, before producing a jaw-dropping final term. She racked up eight of her 19 disposals in the fourth quarter, but it was not just accumulating, but actually asserting her influence on the match. She took the game on, had multiple bounces, broke the lines and used her penetrating kick to get the ball forward. Semple can use both sides of her body as well which is a big tick, though if she gets onto that right side, watch out. At times he looked a little fumbly which is usually uncharacteristic, but once she found any space, the National Academy member inflicted maximum damage.

#12 Emily Rankin
Midfielder | 166cm | 11/05/2008

Stats: 24 disposals, 6 marks, 12 tackles, 5 clearances, 1 inside 50, 2 behinds

It was the type of game you’d expect from the Ranges’ skipper who lead from the front all day and her performance never wavered. She cracked in, laid some bone-crunching tackles, and also competed strongly in the air, including a couple of intercept marks. Her ground-covering ability stood out, and Rankin very nearly became the hero with what looked to be a brilliant strike on goal from 40m that was frustratingly touched on the goalline. That would have put the Ranges up late in the game, but Rankin can walk away proud given she left nothing out on the park.

#17 Lara Williams
Defender/Midfielder | 168cm | 29/08/2008

Stats: 23 disposals, 2 marks, 1 tackle, 1 clearance, 1 inside 50, 6 rebound 50s

Was one of the Ranges’ best across the first three quarters, accumulating 21 disposals to be equal with Rankin as the most heading into the final term. Like her skipper, Williams did not have much of it in the last stanza, but her impact from behind the ball was undoubted. She takes the game on and is not afraid to hold onto the ball for a little longer and try and burst into space, while backing herself to break tackles as well. A clean user of the ball, her positioning around the ground was generally effective, and though her usually higher efficiency was a little less so given the pressure of the game, she was a standout for the Ranges across the first three terms.

#24 Maeve Gill
Key Defender | 180cm | 24/04/2008

Stats: 13 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 5 rebound 50s

It was a mixed bag of a day for Gill who saved some goals, and also made some errors which resulted in goals. Always the competitor, Gill holds her line so well in the back 50 and will always apply pressure both body and once the ball hit the deck. She took what she thought was a mark one-on-one in the goalsquare during the first term but was not paid for far enough, and immediately came under pressure from the taller Hamod who forced Gill to drop it, and as the Ranges defender attempted to rush it, Hamod got her boot to it and kicked a goal. It would have been frustrating, but even earlier in the first term she saved two potential goals with a great spoil and a rushed behind, while taking another strong mark in the second term with great positioning. Can make some errors by foot, but is generally strong with her defensive traits.

#35 Brylee Anderson
Defender/Midfielder | 173cm | 25/03/2008

Stats: 24 disposals, 4 marks, 10 tackles, 4 clearances, 5 inside 50s, 2 rebound 50s, 1 goal, 1 behind

After starting in defence and hardly being sighted, Anderson moved on-ball and started to have greater impact on the game. Once she was around the contest, the National Academy member impacted with her work in close, and also pushed hard forward to kick a goal and narrowly is a couple of others. Her finish from 35 metres early in the second term was as you’d expect, unlike her strike from 20 metres in the fourth quarter that she would like back. Outside of her forward forays, Anderson was her fierce self, and laid another double-digit tackles in the tight loss.

Mentions

Molly Reimers

Scarlett Marsh

Evi Irving

Ruby Geurts

Jasmine Whitten

Ella Bologa

Amelia Hamod

Scout Semple

Emily Rankin

Lara Williams

Maeve Gill

Brylee Anderson

Dandenong Stingrays vs Eastern Ranges

DANDENONG Stingrays enjoyed another incredible win, keeping their unbeaten start to the Talent League Girls season alive by knocking off reigning premiers Eastern Ranges in the first of the grand final rematches.
