His ability to accelerate off a standing start saw him escape congestion and burn off opponents with relative ease. Hardman’s turn of foot made his search for combination play all the more easy, particularly when he operated as a high forward. His more permanent move into midfield allowed him to shine by cutting through traffic frequently. He ended up with a richly deserved goal in term four, steadying nicely over the back.

#6 Liam Basil (Sandringham Dragons)
Midfielder/Forward | 181cm | 22/04/2010

Stats: 16 disposals, 6 marks, 5 tackles, 2 goals

Basil had a case for being Metro’s most impactful player in the first half. He ended up spending plenty of time forward in the second half, but kicked both of his goals before the main break with excellent set shot finishes from tight angles. Basil was otherwise sighted looking to work his way out of congestion, driving his legs and stepping past opponents. He was caught and mown down in the process on a few occasions, but continued to take the game on and was tenacious in-tight. That kind of attacking instinct to take ground made him a player Country had no choice but to defend.

#14 Will Thornton (Oakleigh Chargers)
Wing/Defender | 185cm | 25/06/2010

Stats: 21 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal

Thornton came to life in the second half having posted just three touches beforehand. A shift to his more natural defensive post was the catalyst, allowing the Carlton father-son prospect to get his hands on the ball more regularly. Additionally, he provided a big lift with his intensity and desperation, throwing himself into aerial contests and working hard to accumulate around the ground. Thornton assumed the kick-in duties and racked up possessions in space where he could utilise his sharp foot skills. He also streamed forward with a wicked running goal in the third term to highlight just how damaging he can be in top form. Four-quarter consistency is key.

#18 Louis Grinter (Oakleigh Chargers)
Midfielder/Forward | 187cm | 04/12/2010

Stats: 20 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 4 clearances

Grinter caught the eye with his smooth and effortless movement, somewhat defiant of a player his size. Bearing resemblance 2026 draft prospect Harrison Chapman, he was effective when receiving the ball and working into space, gliding as he carried the ball forward. Grinter’s class and connectivity made him an effective player both through the middle and up forward, while he also found plenty of the ball while dropping into the back half. At the other end, he wasn’t afraid to have a ping at the goals but ended up with two minor scores for the day.

Lukas Koutoufides kicks from congestion | Image Credit: Rob Lawson/AFL Photos

#19 Lukas Koutoufides (Northern Knights)
Forward/Midfielder | 189cm | 16/07/2010

Stats: 20 disposals, 3 tackles, 6 clearances

There is already a considerable amount of hype surrounding Koutoufides, who had a game-high 16 disposals in the first half. His size and power were noticeable at each contest, with the Carlton father-son gun often forced to dispose with opponents hanging off him. Nonetheless, he handled the ball cleanly and was able to either dish off or shift onto his favoured left foot. When situated up forward, Koutoufides provided a strong aerial target as he ventured past the wing.

#21 Braith Lafaialii (Western Jets)
Key Defender | 190cm | 04/10/2010

Stats: 20 disposals, 4 marks, 5 rebound 50s

Despite the scoreline, Metro had a relatively talented array of defenders at their disposal, Lafaialii being one of them. The mobile tall consistently made early reads and was able to intercept across the back 50, either marking or chiming in with a spoil. He split just about every contest we engaged in, at a minimum, and was nimble enough to support Metro’s transitional ball movement. Lafaialii was the dominant player in his side’s defensive half, particularly after O’Callaghan moved forward.

#25 Finn O’Callaghan (Oakleigh Chargers)
Key Defender/Forward | 196cm | 07/08/2010

Stats: 14 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal

A remarkable tall talent, O’Callaghan showed his wares at either end of the ground on Monday. He started down back with plenty of productive play on the rebound, displaying great skill and athleticism for a player his size. O’Callaghan carried the ball and distributed it with aplomb, hitting targets at will and linking up with teammates on the move. He also had a defensive presence by reliably splitting aerial contests across the last line. O’Callaghan’s aerial nous was further highlighted with a move forward, where he stuck a terrific mark at full extension overhead and slotted his lone goal. He was difficult to stop on the lead and wasn’t afraid to shoot with either foot.

#26 Henry Woods (Eastern Ranges)
Key Forward/Ruck | 197cm | 07/02/2010

Stats: 15 disposals, 5 marks, 15 hitouts

Another of Metro’s prominent and mobile talls, Woods impressed with his ability to cover the ground. He popped up as a marking target all over the place and got involved in handball chains like an extra midfielder, highlighting his considerable athleticism. Woods complimented that play with strong bodywork in ruck contests and a couple of tough marks as a leading forward. He fell short of hitting the scoreboard though, sending his one set shot opportunity out on the full.

The Vic Country squad celebrates its win | Image Credit: Rob Lawson/AFL Photos

VIC COUNTRY:

#1 Isaac Brown (Gippsland Power)
Forward/Midfielder | 174cm | 19/02/2010

Stats: 14 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 3 goals

Brown set the platform for Country’s win with three quality first-quarter goals. The crafty small got going with a free kick conversion, earned after pinning his opponent in a tackle. He then dipped into his bag of tricks, dribbling a second through over the back before his third became the highlight of the day. Brown swooped on the ball, baulked an opponent and nearly went to ground, before popping back up to straighten and checkside through the big sticks. He continued to be evasive in spurts throughout the day, even getting a late run at the centre ball-ups.

#4 Lenny Sims (Murray Bushrangers)
Forward | 179cm | 28/08/2010

Stats: 19 disposals, 4 tackles, 5 inside 50s, 2 goals

Sims provided high value in Country’s front half, hitting the scoreboard with 2.3 and helping his side connect inside 50. He showed great composure to purposefully pick out his targets when going by foot, crafting each forward-50 entry with the intention to create scores. Sims often launched the ball deep and wasn’t afraid to have a ping himself, injecting speed to the play either way. His majors came via a classy snap and a booming long-range finish in the first half.

#5 Harry Lindsay (Geelong Falcons)
Wing | 180cm | 07/04/2010

Stats: 15 disposals, 4 marks, 4 inside 50s

A Lindsay from the Geelong Falcons region donning Vic Country colours is usually good news, and that rung true on Monday. The combative wingman played his role well, tracking back to support the defensive and finding width to be an outlet in the attacking phase. Lindsay competed fantastically well in the air for a player his size, showing a bit of spring to match his bravery. He also got Vic Country going with run up and down the line, helping shift the ball from end-to-end.

#7 Oscar Roydhouse (Geelong Falcons)
Defender/Midfielder | 180cm | 09/01/2010

Stats: 19 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 3 clearances

Another Falcon in the fold, Roydhouse settled in down back before bringing his speed to the midfield battle. He quite often found himself in good spots to force intercepts and quickly looked to set his side in forward motion. The left-footer delivered the ball stylishly, barring an early kick across defensive 50, and mopped up with vigour at ground level. Roydhouse was also prepared to do the dirtywork when stationed on-ball, where he either burst out of congestion or handed the ball off. He was able to get some run going on the outside too, especially late in the piece.

#13 Chase Whelan (Sandringham Dragons)
Key Forward | 192cm | 06/01/2010

Stats: 13 disposals, 7 marks, 4 goals

Bagging a haul of four goals, Whelan was the dominant key forward afield. He took a little time to find his radar, blazing away with some early snaps off either foot, but ended up being quite clinical over the mark. The powerful goalkicker had no trouble getting separation on the lead, showing his craft and mobility to earn each scoring chance. Whelan either stuck his grabs or latched onto the loose ball before swinging around to get a kick away. He was a focal point inside 50 but also presented up the ground and played with genuine presence. Capable of scoring in bunches.

#14 Jackson Butterworth (Bendigo Pioneers)
Midfielder | 178cm | 05/02/2010

Stats: 17 disposals, 5 clearances, 6 inside 50s, 1 goal

Butterworth was among Country’s most prominent inside ball winners. He prised possession cleanly and disposed with minimal fuss, either getting boot to ball or handing off while absorbing tackle pressure. Butterworth increasingly showed his ability to dart into space, looking to burst out of the tight areas he initially won the ball in. He was also difficult to beat in one-on-one situations around the ground, highlighted by his fourth quarter goal where he split a contest, recovered the ball and slotted it home on the run.

#16 Eamon Hyde (Murray Bushrangers)
Key Defender | 190cm | 21/02/2010

Stats: 18 disposals, 8 marks, 4 tackles, 8 rebound 50s

Hyde was absolutely immense across Vic Country’s backline and dominated up to half time. He chalked up 12 touches and six marks before the main break, clunking three contested grabs among his several intercepts. Hyde took up aggressive positions behind the ball and went hard when the opportunity to impact presented, attacking each aerial contest like a madman. While that competitiveness stood out, so did his play-reading ability. Hyde’s physicality was felt and he looked to set his side on the front foot with ball in hand, although was prone to blazing away. Nonetheless, 17 of his 18 disposals were delivered by foot and he took plenty of kick-ins.

#20 Daniel May (Geelong Falcons)
Midfielder | 187cm | 06/11/2010

Stats: 20 disposals, 6 marks, 8 tackles, 5 clearances

A big body at the contest, May didn’t just do things by force. He extracted and distributed the ball cleanly by hand, then worked hard to spread to the outside where he could use his foot skills. May got great length on his kicks and was generally calm with ball in hand – both inside and outside. His ground coverage grew more impressive as the game wore on, complimenting his stoppage work.

Mentions

Vic Metro vs Vic Country

VIC COUNTRY claimed bragging rights over their Metro counterparts in the opening Pool A fixture of this year’s Under 16 National Championships on Monday.
