The Chargers captain repeatedly won her own ball under pressure and simply could not be shifted off it – a third-quarter gather at half-back where she was confronted and tackled but wrestled clear through sheer strength was the clearest example, while a second-term centre clearance saw her power out of the contest and thump deep to the forward pocket with multiple Eastern players draped over her.

Her overhead work was a feature against the smaller Goulding, winning a series of strong one-on-one marks across the ground, and her right boot remains one of the most penetrating in the draft pool — a thumping kick from a middle gather in the opening term set up an Abi D’Intini goal, and her ability to launch the ball 50-plus metres consistently flipped territory in the Chargers’ favour.

Perri Goulding

+ Clean hands at ground level
+ Tackling pressure
+ Burst speed
+ Clearance work
+ Composure
+ Work rate

Goulding’s calling card is her hands at ground level, and in congested, slippery conditions she was as clean as anyone on the field. Time and again she gathered off the deck in traffic, spun out of a tackle and dished cleanly – a fourth-term gather in heavy traffic with a spin and handball away, and a composed ground-ball win late in the third where she refused to panic under pressure and found the right option, were the highlights of a genuinely impressive afternoon at the coalface.

For lighter bodied midfielder, her nine clearances – five from centre bounces – was a game-high. Add in her burst speed, which saw her break clear of Curry through the middle on more than one occasion, and her relentless tackling, and Goulding looked every bit the X-factor bottom-ager that will continue to hold Eastern in good stead. She has not had a lot of midfield opportunities this year due to the strength of the group, but with Vic Metro playing and a host of top-age talents out, Goulding grabbed her opportunity with both hands.

Perri Goulding had a breakout performance against the Chargers in the midfield. A handful of her kicks were errant such as a long ball out on the full on the wing in the first term, a couple of thumps into contests that were intercepted, and a shot at goal in the final term that drifted to the right for a behind. Her instinct to back her power and go long is a weapon for gaining metres, but being able to really refine that longer kick and take the extra few seconds could be a huge plus. She has also identified her endurance as an area to improve, particularly with regards to her repeat contest work and look to get involved in more transitional chains.

Perri Goulding

– Strength
– Aerial contests

For all her cleanliness, ball security when she breaks into space is the next step. There were a couple of occasions – a burst from the wing in the third term the clearest – where the ball spilled from her grasp as she accelerated, or could be thrown around in a strong tackle. She is capable of getting her hands free and not panic under pressure which is a huge plus, but with further strength, she can not only buy herself more time but potentially shrug tackles too. The aerial contest is also a natural limitation at 161cm; she was beaten in the air by Curry, and learning to use her body and timing to compete or bring the ball to ground will matter as she grows into that senior midfield role.

STYLES OF PLAY

This was, for long stretches, a genuine great battle to watch even when they weren’t opposed to one another. It made for a fascinating contrast in body type and method: Curry the powerful, readymade contested midfielder who wins the ball and breaks lines through strength; Goulding the lighter, quicker ground-level operator who hunts, gathers and links.

Curry did her best work as a bull at the coalface and a release valve behind the ball, sweeping in defence and using her kick to launch the Chargers forward. She mixed her clearance work with genuine defensive intent, laying several strong tackles to force rushed disposals, and her intercept mark on the wing in the final term was a reminder of how much ground she covers for a player of her size.

Goulding, by contrast, was all energy and clean touch. She won the clearance count, applied pressure relentlessly – a terrific tackle in attacking 50 to lock the ball in was typical – and consistently turned defence into attack with quick hands. When the ball was below head height she more than held her own against her more celebrated opponent; it was only when the contest went aerial that Curry’s size told.

SUMMARY

Curry’s 30 disposals, six inside 50s and the leadership she provided through the middle made for a statement return – this was her first Talent League Girls outing of the year after injury, albeit with a run already under her belt for the Allies in their loss to South Australia a week earlier.

Any concerns about rust were quickly put to bed, and on a day her side got the points, the Chargers captain was front and centre, reaffirming why she rates as a genuine first-rounder in this year’s crop. The questions around her remain less about ability than circumstance – her Giants Academy tie and the bidding that will shape where she lands – but the footballer is ready-made.

Goulding, a full year younger and not eligible until 2027, was the revelation of the duel. To win nine clearances and at the coalface as a bottom-ager who was realistically playing her first full-time midfield game this season, was the kind of performance that gets a player talked about early, and the traits – clean hands, speed, pressure and composure – are the right ones to build a midfield future on.

One side walked away with the four points and a top-ager who looks the finished product fresh off her return; the other found further evidence that its next wave is already arriving. Both gave plenty to like.

Mentions

TWO CONTRASTING but talented natural midfielders went head-to-head in Round 13 of the Talent League Girls at the Kennedy Community Centre, with Oakleigh Chargers captain Zoe Curry and Eastern Ranges bottom-ager Perri Goulding spending large chunks of the day causing headaches for the respective opposition coach in the Chargers’ 5.5 (35) to 4.5 (29) win.
