BENDIGO Pioneers utility and top-age draft prospect Lacey Nihill<\/a> continued to show her worth as a prolific ball-winner in Round 16 of the Talent League Girls. Despite the Pioneers suffering a heavy 11.11 (77) to 3.5 (23) defeat at the hands of the Geelong Falcons, Nihill was a standout performer in the midfield, fighting hard at the coalface and driving the ball forward at every opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 172cm top-ager, who has already represented Vic Country and the National All-Stars this year, amassed 26 disposals, including a game-high 16 groundballs. Her ability to extract the ball was on full display, winning nine clearances – four of which were centre bounce clearances – while also showcasing her trademark run and carry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A top-ager in the 2026 Talent League Girls competition, Lacey Nihill has been a consistent force for the Bendigo Pioneers. Having started her football journey at Auskick alongside her twin brother, Nihill briefly switched to soccer before returning to football when tackling was permitted. She played with the boys at St Thereses Sharks before joining the girls at Sandhurst, eventually making her Under 18s debut for the Pioneers at just 14 years of age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known for her versatility, vision, and defensive pressure, Nihill models her game on Melbourne Demons AFLW star Tyla Hanks<\/em><\/strong>, admiring her ability to do the “one per cent things really well.” Her 2026 campaign has been a breakout one, earning her selection for the National All-Stars team and a spot in the Vic Country squad for the AFLW Under 18 Championships. Starting on-ball, Nihill was involved early and often. She showed her intent by breaking down the wing and taking a bounce; while her ensuing kick was rough, it worked out for her team. Shortly after, she was bumped as she delivered a quick, high kick inside 50, demonstrating her willingness to put her body on the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her burst speed was evident midway through the term when she produced a lovely looping handball out of a clearance. Returning to the field after a spell on the bench, Nihill’s reading of the play was exceptional. She won a clearance, kicked to the wing, then burst past her opponent to win the ball again, dishing it off by hand while continuing her run. She capped off a busy seven-disposal quarter by sharking the very next centre clearance, delivering great hands off to a teammate to keep the momentum going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SECOND QUARTER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nihill remained in the midfield and was constantly on the move at stoppages. In the opening minutes, her work rate on the wing allowed her to kick the ball forward, leading directly to a goal for teammate Georgia<\/strong> Garlick<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also showed her defensive smarts, dropping back to a sweeper role in the defensive 50 to collect a spilled ball and dish it off effectively. Her drive out of defence was highlighted by a nice burst and a kick into the middle of the ground. Defensively, she was just as impactful, executing a brilliant dispossessing tackle and following it up with another strong tackle in the final minute of the half, bringing her tally to five disposals for the term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THIRD QUARTER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third quarter saw Nihill continue to work hard both ways, though she had a rare blemish early on. After gathering cleanly at half-back, she opted to handball over the boundary line instead of holding it in, resulting in a free kick against her. However, she quickly made amends by mopping up on the last line of defence to save a potential goal, bursting away from the back pocket and kicking long down the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her work rate was exceptional when she took an intercept mark in defence, played on, took a bounce, and handballed off at half-back before immediately pushing up to the wing to be an option again. She positioned herself perfectly for another intercept mark 30 metres out directly in front of goal, but her subsequent set shot unfortunately hit the post. She finished the quarter with five disposals and two marks, consistently emerging from contests with quick hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FOURTH QUARTER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nihill\u2019s final term was her most prolific, racking up nine disposals despite a heavy knock. Starting on-ball, she executed a nice sidestep and handball under pressure early on. She delivered a lovely kick across the forward 50 that was unfortunately dropped by a teammate, before breaking free from forward congestion. At speed, she opted for a shot on goal rather than hitting a free player in the goalsquare, which was a rare decisional error, missing to the right for a behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a quick handball away from a defensive 50 contest, she was badly winded by an opponent’s knee in the middle of the ground and had to come off the ground. Showing immense resilience, Nihill returned after a rest and immediately tracked the ball well through a stoppage at half-back, controlling it and kicking clear to the wing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her composure in tight spaces shone through late in the game when she sidestepped between two opponents in defence to perfectly release a handball back to a teammate. She capped off her tireless performance by reading the tap perfectly off hands to win the final centre clearance of the day, driving the ball forward one last time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lacey Nihill\u2019s 26-disposal, nine-clearance performance against the Geelong Falcons was a testament to her work rate and inside-outside balance.
