The visitors were potent throughout the day and kicked nine goals to two at one end of North Hobart Oval to run out with a comfortable, albeit slightly flattering, winning margin.

The Devils regained several of their Allies representatives and were once again led by a strong group of bottom-agers. Despite that, captain Mason Brown led from the front with five goals. The bottom-ager led all comers with 31 disposals, including 17 uncontested possessions. His modus operandi was to get Tasmania going from the kick-ins or with overlap run up the ground, often seen driving his legs and launching penetrative kicks. Beams’ sweet left foot was his main weapon, using it 24 times, while he showed great work rate to get into position to rack up as much ball as he did, all around the ground.

#6 Archie Devine
Defender | 181cm | 13/02/2008

Stats: 22 disposals, 6 marks, 9 rebound 50s

Working in tandem with Beams, Devine attacked from defence. He took turns with his bottom-age counterpart to dictate play deep inside 50 or advance high up the ground, getting into dangerous positions to overlap and launch forward by foot. Among his 22 disposals were 19 kicks, with Devine able to pinpoint short targets or get the perfect weight on long-range passes over the back. His smarts, power and combination play were key features of a highly productive game.

#9 Sam Husband
Midfielder | 178cm | 17/09/2009

Stats: 17 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles

While many Tasmanians tended to do their best work by foot, Husband was a keen and clean handballer. He was prepared to get in and under at stoppage, proving strong over the ball and making repeat efforts to win it. The bottom-ager showed good poise in open play and while a little awkward by foot at times, quickly identified his targets and improvised well. He has a great ability to provide connection between the arcs to compliment his work at stoppage.

#11 Oliver Freeland
Ruck | 187cm | 07/11/2008

Stats: 13 disposals, 5 marks, 33 hitouts

A freakish athlete, Freeland won six more hitouts than the entire opposition cohort despite measuring up at only 187cm. Suffice to say, his enormous vertical leap cut the height difference he often conceded, with the spring-heeled talent dominating at the centre ball-ups. He also showed a great ability to land and follow up at stoppage, while spreading hard to become a marking outlet around the ground. All five of his marks were uncontested, drifting wide into the forward wing zone.

#16 Max Gulliver
Midfielder | 178cm | 04/11/2009

Stats: 20 disposals, 5 marks, 7 inside 50s

Gulliver did much of the grunt work for his side, winning a team-high four clearances and eight contested possessions. Enjoying an extended run in midfield, the bottom-ager showed good core strength under pressure and the power to surge out the front of stoppages. While a little patchy at times, he consistently looked to bring the play forward with his turn of speed and long kicking. Gulliver can perhaps take another step by lowering his eyes and refining his foot skills on the run. Still, he’s a high-impact type of player who operates at the right intensity.

#17 Benjamin Russell
Forward/Midfielder | 176cm | 19/03/2009

Stats: 17 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles

Another of Tasmania’s bottom-age Allies representatives, Russell was once again used up forward. The scrappy prospect worked high up the ground and looked to use his speed on the way back to goal, fighting for possession before launching it long. He tackles hard and was prepared to put his body on the line, while his running ability made for easier touches on the outside. Like Gulliver, Russell can work on becoming more effective by foot, but can never be faulted for effort.

#23 Mason Brown
Key Forward | 194cm | 19/03/2008

Stats: 9 disposals, 3 tackles, 5 goals

Quite literally leading from the front, Brown was an absolute monster inside forward 50. He was near-impossible to beat close to goal, with both his marks being contested, although he didn’t just rely on his aerial nous. A genuine powerhouse, Brown competed hard at ground level and used his physical gifts to make Sandringham’s defenders panic. He proved to be a good finisher on the snap and was a genuine focal point for his side. While seldom working too far up the ground, he did so on one eye-catching occasion to lay a terrific rundown tackle in the corridor.

SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS:

#1 Jack Surkitt
Small Forward | 177cm | 13/08/2008

Stats: 11 disposals, 5 tackles, 1 goal

It was another crafty performance from Surkitt, who spent much of the day up forward but had an impact through the middle third. He provided an extra number at stoppages in the centre, putting his quick hands and tough tackle pressure to good use. Surkitt got to show his turn of speed on occasion and used the ball with class once on the outside, on his favoured left foot. He snapped a quality goal in the second quarter and ended up getting a go at the centre ball-ups in term four.

#3 Max Matthews
Defender | 187cm | 03/01/2008

Stats: 20 disposals, 9 marks, 6 rebound 50s

Matthews was Sandringham’s most productive rebounder, racking up 16 uncontested possessions and using the ball with aplomb. The left-footer distributed 16 kicks among his 20 disposals, often looking to move the ball on quickly and backing himself to hit the first option. That lack of hesitance made his smooth transitional play all the more effective. Matthews also positioned well behind the ball to intercept and balanced his decisions between controlling possession or being aggressive.

#20 Henry Thomas
Tall Defender | 192cm | 04/11/2008

Stats: 17 disposals, 8 marks, 4 inside 50s

Thomas was given plenty of freedom to showcase his best traits, taking up advanced positions where he could both intercept and counterattack. The sturdy tall was a trusted ball user, kicking with great power and precision while not being afraid to attack the corridor. That aggressive decision making translated to his intercept work, often looking to take the ball on the move and advance quickly up the ground. He had a great knack for launching scoring chains.

#22 Quentin Hofmann
Tall Forward | 190cm | 12/01/2008

Stats: 11 disposals, 7 marks, 3 goals

Hofmann has a bunch of promising traits and was rewarded for his efforts with scoreboard impact on Sunday. Two of his three goals came in the final term, proving a genuine difference maker as Sandringham kicked away to victory. He clunked a trio of contested marks and converted truly, while also snaring an early stoppage goal to show his athleticism. Hofmann also did so when presenting up the ground, providing a mobile marking target whose strong set of hands served him well on the lead. Whether gaining separation or setting to jump vertically, he was a dangerous avenue to goal.

#25 Jasper Noorbergen
Key Defender | 194cm | 27/01/2008

Stats: 16 disposals, 10 marks, 3 rebound 50s

Along with Thomas and Jasper Williams, Noorbergen was a reliable figure across the defensive half. Providing a calm head, he distributed the ball efficiently by hand and foot while chiming in with several clean intercept marks. Noorbergen was also able to join the attack, either initiating or receiving the switch as Sandringham looked to find an avenue out of defence.

#29 Oliver Mangoni
Forward | 187cm | 19/06/2008

Stats: 15 disposals, 5 marks, 3 goals

Boasting a solid frame and strong hands, Mangoni operated as a makeshift key forward at 187cm. He was able to provide a target up the field but looked most at home inside 50, drawing into the ball and taking marks on the lead. Mangoni was also able to stay involved in open play, crafting chances via tackle pressure and active stoppage play. He can be a little clunky at times but was effective.

Mentions

Mason Brown

Jake Beams

Archie Devine

Sam Husband

Oliver Freeland

Max Gulliver

Benjamin Russell

Jack Surkitt

Max Matthews

Henry Thomas

Quentin Hofmann

Jasper Noorbergen

Oliver Mangoni

Tasmania Devils vs Sandringham Dragons

SANDRINGHAM Dragons have kicked away to a 41-point victory over Tasmania in their standalone Round 19 fixture on Sunday.
