The youngster matched up on Darcy Scott but soon also found himself manning Ken Farmer Medal leader Lachlan Hosie, one of Glenelg’s many marking threats inside 50.

Often settling under the ball in front of his direct opponent, Harris used his leap and reach to split aerial contests – some of which he arguably would have marked against junior opposition. He reeled in one intercept deep in the pocket, reacting first to a long ball in and using his speed to arrive first.

While he certainly does his best work in the air, Harris made terrific follow-up efforts and did his best to recover the loose ball. He was slightly overzealous on one occasion and gave away a high free kick, but showed the right kind of intent from the outset. A positive start under pressure.

SECOND QUARTER:

Harris showed a knack for just doing enough to bring the ball to ground inside defensive 50, operating with great desperation. He continued to settle into shrewd positions behind the ball, but was still building up the confidence to stick intercept marks – either being bodied in the air or opting to spoil.

That method saw 18-year-old knock through a couple of no-nonsense rushed behinds later in the term, the second of which was an authoritative fist to break open the pack. Such play was also a product of Glenelg’s territorial ascendancy, with the Eagles made to absorb plenty of pressure.

Harris once again showed his competitiveness with follow-up recovery efforts. He attacked one particular ground ball brilliantly, driving low to beat an opponent to the punch and cop the hit to win possession, only to throw it out. Still, his commitment was outstanding for a first-gamer.

Mitchell Harris in action for the Eagles | Image Credit: Rookie Me Central

THIRD QUARTER:

Harris’ competitiveness again formed the base for his success in term three. The young gun tracked opponents up and back, didn’t given them anything in the air, and was there to shut them down in open play when he couldn’t intercept.

He extended nicely overhead for another intercept mark, stationed precariously one-out inside defensive 50. It was one of a few contests where he adjusted to take the back shoulder, trusting his athletic gifts to shut down the space and leap high.

Harris’ playreading ability could also be observed in a passage where he peeled off his opponent to apply a smother, before following up with determination to win a free kick. Another double-effort further outlined his tenacity, ending it with a crunching lock-up tackle. He was up for the fight.

FOURTH QUARTER:

Rounding out his debut performance strongly, Harris’ aerial prowess continued to shine. He produced a crashing spoil from the back of a pack and even shut down well on a leading opponent – again benefiting from taking the back shoulder.

Harris’ ability to keep his feet after his initial effort allowed him to then mop up and dish the ball out to more damaging users. His agility was also noted with a composed pair of baulks to help move the ball out of tight spots.

It took Glenelg’s forwards until the final term to beat Harris in the air, with the debutant doing well to help quell a multi-pronged Bays attack. The effort was made even more impressive by the early loss of Patrick Weckert through injury.

Mentions

Mitchell Harris

ALL-AUSTRALIAN full back Mitchell Harris was among the weekend’s SANFL League debutants, thrown into the fire against a rampant Glenelg side.
