A CAREER-BEST performance near the pointy end of her top-age draft year. India Bonadeo<\/a> racked up a season-high 26 disposals and five rebound 50s from defence as Claremont crushed South Fremantle 9.6 (60) to 2.4 (16) in the final round of the WAFLW home-and-away season, and days later found her name on the AFLW State Draft Combine list. FIRST QUARTER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bonadeo started deep in defence and immediately produced the single most valuable act of her afternoon, getting a spoil in on the goalline to deny a certain major. It was the sort of read-and-react moment that has become her signature in the back half, and it set the tone for a term where her defensive instincts were consistently a step ahead of the contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proactive streak showed early too. She led out in front of her opponent and could not quite hold the mark, but backed her own error up well to gather and handball away rather than letting the spill turn into a turnover. A free kick won for a marking infringement in defence was followed by a lovely long kick to half-back that took Claremont clear of danger. Pushing higher up the ground, she read the flight to gather in front of Annalie Polimeno<\/strong> on the wing and took the ball out to kill the Bulldogs’ momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not everything came off. A strong overhead mark was followed by a long kick that bounced out of bounds, and at the 18-minute mark she competed hard in a one-on-one in defence only to be out-marked – unlucky rather than beaten. She closed the quarter by winning a push-in-the-back free inside defensive 50 at the 19th minute, attempting a sidestep, getting legged for her trouble, and kicking long to a wing contest anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SECOND QUARTER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quieter term by volume, but the ball use was the best of the game. Pushing up into the middle at the three-minute mark, Bonadeo delivered a low bullet into the corridor – a kick that demanded confidence in both technique and judgement, and one plenty of defenders at this level would not attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two minutes later she took a handball receive and again went low into the corridor, this time a lovely short pass that kept the chain moving at speed. The one blemish came at 15-and-a-half minutes when she could not quite stick a tackle at half-back, the second time in the game her tackling execution let a genuine opportunity slip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THIRD QUARTER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside the opening 30 seconds she was up on the wing taking a handball receive and going low and piercing to half-forward, an early sign that she intended to be involved further afield than her stat line as a deep defender might suggest. She held a high defensive line well through the term, and when she was caught a little ball-watching, she worked hard to get back and apply pressure rather than admiring the passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the two-minute mark she marked deep in defence and hit a short kick effectively to half-back. Four minutes later she was pressuring on the wing to slow a South Fremantle transition, then took a handball receive off a step – the kick that followed was a touch nonchalant and almost costly switch at centre half-back, but it worked out. Quick hands on the defensive side of the middle were cleanly executed shortly after, and at the 12-minute mark she came out and locked the ball up well, playing proactively even as she was tackled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FOURTH QUARTER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the result long settled, the most important part for recruiters watching was that Bonadeo kept hunting the game. Five minutes in she was pressuring her opponent on the defensive side of the middle, and she flicked off an effective handball at half-back shortly after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the lat 10 minutes, Bonadeo ran all the way to half-forward looking for a handball receive that never came – the run itself the point, and evidence of a player who wants to be involved in the offensive half rather than simply defending the back 50. Her final telling moment came in the last minute, stealing the ball in tight quarters and spinning clear, only for the kick to be smothered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bonadeo produced the performance that has been possible throughout the season, but finally executed in Round 18. She racked up 26 disposals which was six more than her previous best – against East Fremantle in Round 7 – and also rebounded the ball five times to add important run and carry too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goalline spoil in the first term was the most important single act, but the more instructive passages were the two low corridor kicks in the second quarter. Ball use has been the area where tall defenders get exposed at the next level, and Bonadeo’s willingness to take the risky option through the middle \u2013 and execute it \u2013 is a genuine draft trait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition with the aerial work, and read of the play she showed alongside Mia Carlshausen<\/strong> at the Under 18 Championships, and the fact she can be thrown forward or into the ruck if needed, and the versatility that made her such a compelling Under 16s prospect is finally showing up week to week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tackling is the obvious fix. One tackle from 26 disposals is light, and there were two occasions – at half-back in the second and again in the third – where a completed tackle would have turned defence into offence. Her ball use off a step or under pressure also remains a shade below her ball use with time, and the smothered kick late in the last was a reminder that the disposal can get rushed when the corridor closes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Named on the AFLW State Draft Combine list alongside fellow West Australian teammates Charli Bassett<\/strong> and Marie Polimeno<\/strong>, Bonadeo heads into finals with the continuity she has never previously had. The Tigers meet Swan Districts with a Grand Final berth on the line, and a player once described as the great unknown of this WAFLW crop now has the chance to answer the question on the biggest stage the state has to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
