She was clean around the contest and powerful in transition, breaking from half-back, using a fend-off and repeatedly driving the ball deep into attack. Her third goal was a standout piece of individual craft – feigning a handball from 40 metres before slamming it home – and she showed her class again by finding Kate Alexander inside 50 with a perfectly weighted kick.

#14 Kate Alexander (Forward/Ruck)

Stats: 8 disposals, 1 mark (1 contested), 2 tackles, 7 hitouts, 4 clearances, 1 inside 50, 1 goal

Alexander made an impact in both of her roles, rotating into the ruck and winning four clearances while also hitting the scoreboard as a forward. Her goal in the second term came after she stayed involved at ground level in the goalsquare, while a good tap down and smother after moving into the ruck showed her follow-up work. She was clean in the contest, regularly read the taps and worked hard to win the second effort, while her inboard pass from the wing in the third term was a brilliant example of the vision and kicking that make her so damaging. Her one-on-one work against Olivia Evans in the final term – winning the ball, releasing it under pressure and then laying a tackle to lock it in – encapsulated her relentless two-way game.

>> PLAYER FOCUS: Emily Mableson (West Adelaide)

#24 Chelsea Newitt (Forward)

Stats: 7 disposals, 1 mark, 8 tackles, 2 inside 50s

Newitt’s eight tackles were the headline, as she brought immense pressure through the forward half despite limited chances to accumulate. She pushed high up the ground to tackle on the wing, interrupted a kick in the middle without being credited with a disposal and showed clean hands in the wet when the ball came her way. A forward whose defensive work rate and ability to impact the contest without possession make her a difficult matchup.

SOUTH ADELAIDE:

#1 Jaidee-Lee Shortridge (Forward)

Stats: 10 disposals, 1 mark, 7 tackles, 1 inside 50, 3 goals, 1 behind

Shortridge was superb in the wet, kicking three goals and laying seven tackles in a performance that showcased her natural goal sense and forward pressure.
