This time out, Sandringham Dragons star Albert MacGowan sunk a clutch set shot right on the final siren to clinch a thrilling victory.

The Knights led for most of the day at Preston City Oval in what was a tense, low-scoring tussle. Both sides shared the run of play at the scoring end without being overly clinical, leaving the door ajar for the dramatic finish that ensued. MacGowan won a holding the ball free kick to have the decisive say.

Plenty of mouth-watering matchups were scattered across the field, most notably in Northern’s forwardline where the Knights’ talls battled against Sandringham’s game key defenders. The duel between Vic Metro teammates Tyson Bradley and Sam Gayfer was arguably the best of the lot.

The result means Sandringham remains on track for a fifth-straight Grand Final berth, having won three of the last four premierships. The bottom-ager has always been a capable interceptor and impacted in the air with confidence, positioning well before leaping into each contest. Whether arriving third-up or outpointing his opponent one-on-one, Bakoulas was hardly beaten. His value was compounded on the rebound with raking left-foot kicks and aggressive ventures to launch attacks further afield.

#16 Tyson Bradley
Key Defender | 195cm | 16/09/2008

Stats: 9 disposals, 2 marks, 2 rebound 50s

Bradley produced a brilliant display of defensive craft which went a long way to quelling the influence of Knights dangerman Sam Gayfer. Bradley had the physicality and determination to nullify Gayfer’s aerial influence, and did just enough to prevent his follow-up work from becoming too damaging. He just seemed to always be able to get a hand in and alleviate pressure. Bradley was arguably Sandringham’s best for his role on the day – a true defender’s defender.

#17 Lochie Burrows
Midfielder/Forward | 179cm | 11/04/2008

Stats: 9 disposals, 7 tackles, 7 inside 50s

Burrows’ blend of speed and scrappiness highlighted a typically dogged day for the rising prospect. Burrows forged a couple of dangerous attacking forays, backing himself to burn off opponents and slalom through traffic en route to goal. While his end product wasn’t quite there when travelling at full tilt, his ability to pop out of congestion and put speed on the ball was outstanding. His first of two opening half goals was one of pure class, collecting a half-volley at speed before wheeling around to snap the ball home. He was difficult to contain one-out inside 50 on account of his smarts and incredibly clean handling, which was evident with a strong mark for his second major. Dimer’s crumbing and evasive technique stood out in patches thereafter along with his determined tackling. He earned the opportunity on the back of a perfectly executed tackle, pinning the arm and bringing his charging opponent to ground. MacGowan picked up 17 of his 24 disposals in the first half and spent a good amount of time up forward, although certainly made most of his influence on the inside with 13 contested possessions. His natural ball-winning ability and preparedness to get stuck in a stoppage made up for his lesser impact on the outside, where he normally accumulates and dictates play.

#57 Oliver Bartal
Tall Defender | 190cm | 04/03/2008

Stats: 23 disposals, 4 marks, 5 rebound 50s

Bartal was given plenty of freedom in a unique role down back, where he was Sandringham’s most trusted playmaker. He was prepared to win his own ball and showed excellent vision and skill to flick it out effectively under pressure, running at 100 per cent efficiency with his 13 handballs.
