A COMPETITION that has never produced a three-peat meets a club that has never produced a premiership. Williamstown makes its first VFL Women’s Grand Final appearance after topping the ladder, while North Melbourne Werribee chases an unprecedented third consecutive flag. The Seagulls hold the minor premiership, the league’s best and fairest, its leading goalkicker and the only win in this season’s head-to-head. The Kangaroos hold the two most recent premiership cups and arrive off a preliminary final that suggested nothing has changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
NEED TO KNOW<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Date:<\/strong> Sunday, September 20 FORM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Nothing separated the top two across the home-and-away season but percentage. Williamstown finished 14-2 and claimed the minor premiership ahead of North Melbourne Werribee on the same record, a season built on a defensive record no other side came close to matching. Through 14 rounds the Seagulls had conceded 271 points at a percentage of 255.0; the next-stingiest defence in the competition had given up 362.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul Groves’ side found the preliminary final a far tighter proposition. Williamstown survived a stirring Port Melbourne finish to win a derby by two points, 6.4 (40) to 5.8 (38), with Emily Eaves<\/a> kicking the final-quarter goal that settled it from 16 disposals and six clearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n North Melbourne Werribee took the alternative route. The back-to-back premiers brushed aside Collingwood by 61 points, 12.5 (77) to 2.4 (16), in a performance defined by spread rather than any single match-winner \u2014 Alana Barba<\/a> (23 disposals), Ava Seton<\/a> (21), Charlotte Ryan<\/a> (21) and AFLW-listed Abby Favell<\/a> (21) all found the football. The Kangaroos won flags by six points over Collingwood in 2025 and 20 points over the Western Bulldogs in 2024, and would complete the set under a coach in his first season. Alex McKenzie took over in May when Brett Gourley was called up to the elite level, and has guided the side to a third straight decider without missing a beat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n HEAD-TO-HEAD<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n 2026: Williamstown 1 win | North Melbourne Werribee 0 wins<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The sides met once, in Round 14 at DSV Stadium, and Williamstown removed all doubt about which was the form team. The Seagulls took control from the opening bounce and never loosened their grip in a 9.4 (58) to 3.3 (21) victory, restricting the Kangaroos to their lowest score of the season and claiming top spot in the process. It was also the match in which Western Jets products Addison West<\/a> and Kiara Boyd<\/a> debuted in blue and gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The caveat matters in both directions. The North Melbourne Werribee side named for Sunday is not the one beaten by 37 points in August – six of its 21 have played four games or fewer this season, with AFLW commitments dictating availability week to week. Eliza Straford<\/a> returns for the omitted Elise Vella<\/a>, adding a forward-half presence at five goals for the year in place of an intercepting defender. The rest is the group that has carried the Seagulls all season: 15 of the named 21 have played 11 games or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n North Melbourne Werribee’s absences are the story of the team sheet. Favell, who gathered 21 disposals in the preliminary final, is unavailable on AFLW duty, removing a 19.3-disposal, 5.3-mark midfielder operating at 66.7 per cent efficiency. More significant still is the omission of Madeleine Di Cosmo<\/a>, the Kangaroos’ second-highest ball-winner at 22.3 disposals and a centreline selection in the 2026 VFLW State Team. Di Cosmo averaged 12 handballs, 4.6 clearances and 7.8 tackles at 69.7 per cent efficiency. Zara Flanigan<\/a> comes in off three games, bringing tackling pressure at 5.7 per game and a secondary ruck option, but there is no direct replacement for what has been lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n STATS THAT MATTER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The season averages frame two teams reaching the same destination by different roads. North Melbourne Werribee wins more of the football at 266.1 disposals to 224.3, but the entire gap sits in one column. Kicks are effectively identical at 149.1 to 148.9; handballs run 75.2 to 117.3. Williamstown kicks 66.5 per cent of its disposals, the Kangaroos 56.0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That shows up at the other end. Inside 50s are near enough to level at 35.5 to 37.0, yet North Melbourne Werribee converts 25.9 per cent of its entries into goals against Williamstown’s 19.4, and marks 53.9 to 45.4. The Kangaroos average 9.6 goals to the Seagulls’ 6.9 \u2014 and concede far more, which is exactly the trade Williamstown has refused to make all season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Where Williamstown holds the edge is at the source. The Seagulls average 43.4 hitouts to 35.7 and 30.1 clearances to 28.9, with Georgia Howes<\/a> (22.7 hitouts, 3.2 clearances, 66.2 per cent contested possession rate) giving her midfielders first use. Eaves is the engine – the 2026 Lambert-Pearce Medallist averages 18.9 disposals at a 66.7 per cent contested rate, 5.9 clearances, 4.6 tackles and 13 goals from midfield. Naomi Ferres<\/a> (18.1 disposals, 6.5 intercepts, 6.2 tackles) and Megan Williamson<\/a> (a team-high 8.3 tackles) supply the pressure around her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n North Melbourne Werribee still answers with the best remaining midfield pair in the competition. Barba averages 23.8 disposals, 5.5 clearances, 7.1 tackles and 3.9 score involvements with 10 goals; Seton, the VFLW Coaches MVP, matches her at 21.8 disposals, 5.5 clearances and a competition-leading 9.5 tackles, also with 10 goals. Renee Tierney<\/a> is the most efficient user on the ground at 70.6 per cent with 11 goals and four score involvements a game. Without Di Cosmo and Favell, though, the load on that trio becomes considerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The deciding battle may be inside 50. Mia Zielinski<\/a> won the Rohenna Young Medal with 32 home-and-away goals and takes four marks a game including one contested; Nyakoat Dojiok<\/a>, the 2025 leading goalkicker, averages two goals from just 10.1 disposals, the most efficient scoring return in the match. Mikayla Hyde<\/a> (6.6 intercepts at 74.9 per cent efficiency) and Laura Blue<\/a> (6.1 intercepts, 3.4 rebound 50s) are the defenders charged with stopping them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For draft watchers, the two eligible names both wear blue and gold, and both will be playing their third senior game in a Grand Final. West has translated her Western Jets midfield craft directly, averaging 17.5 disposals – 12 of them by hand – with three clearances and a 57.1 per cent contested possession rate across a Round 14 debut and a two-point preliminary final. Boyd profiles as the reader of the play, returning six intercepts and three marks a game from half-back across the same two outings. That Groves has trusted both in a derby preliminary final and again on the last day of the season says plenty; neither is a passenger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n PREDICTION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Almost everything measurable points to Williamstown. The minor premiership, the best defence in the competition by a distance, the ruck and clearance edge, the Lambert-Pearce Medallist, the leading goalkicker, and a 37-point win in the only meeting of the season, in which North Melbourne Werribee posted its lowest score. Set against that is a side that has won the last two flags and dismantled Collingwood by 61 points a week ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If Barba and Seton win the ball often enough for the handball chains to function, the Kangaroos have the marking targets and the conversion rate to make Williamstown’s modest scoring average look thin. But the loss of Di Cosmo alongside Favell strips out the depth that made the preliminary final look so easy, Howes and Russell should own the tap, and Eaves is the best player on the ground. The Seagulls have spent a season proving nobody scores freely against them, and one more afternoon of it delivers a first premiership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Williamstown by 8 points.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n
