{"id":26223,"date":"2017-06-13T18:54:39","date_gmt":"2017-06-13T08:54:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.afldraftcentral.com.au\/?p=26223"},"modified":"2021-10-06T06:30:36","modified_gmt":"2021-10-05T20:30:36","slug":"relaxed-reed-revels-in-rebels-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/central.rookieme.com\/afl\/2017\/06\/13\/relaxed-reed-revels-in-rebels-role\/","title":{"rendered":"Relaxed Reed revels in Rebels role"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PLAYING his role for the team and seeing where it takes him is all Greater Western Victoria Rebels\u2019 onballer <strong>Trent Reed<\/strong> is concerned about this season.<\/p>\n<p>While others might be weighed down by the pressure of playing in the TAC Cup and juggling football with studies, Reed is happy to just focus on performing week in, week out for his team.<\/p>\n<p>Reed, who hails from Hampden league club Cobden which has an impressive list of alumni \u2013 Ben Cunnington, Gary Rohan and Jackson &amp; Zac Merrett \u2013 is pleased with how his 2017 season is going and the atmosphere around the club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going pretty well, my form is alright I guess,\u201d he said. \u201cI love it down at Greater Western; it\u2019s a good club, good atmosphere, a great coach, just a good bunch of blokes. \u201cI don\u2019t feel much expectation on me as much as there would be on other players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed said his role had developed into more midfield minutes this season, after spending time forward in his bottom-age year in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been playing more of a midfield role this season,\u201d he said. \u201cLast season I\u2019d play mid-forward, but this season I\u2019ve been more of an inside midfielder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed admitted the 2017 team lacked the elite talent it had in 2016 \u2013 which saw <strong>Hugh McCluggage<\/strong>, <strong>Jarrod Berry<\/strong>, <strong>Cedric Cox<\/strong> and <strong>Willem Drew<\/strong> all drafted into the AFL in the top 40 picks \u2013 but it made up for it in youthful exuberance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have a lot of top-age talent this year, we\u2019re inexperienced,\u201d he said. \u201cWe don\u2019t have as many top-age talent as we did last year. \u201cOnce our bottom-agers get experience we\u2019ll be pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Rebels will miss <strong>Cal Wellings<\/strong>, <strong>Lloyd Meek<\/strong> and <strong>Jordan Johnston<\/strong> if the trio are selected for Vic Country in the National Under 18 Championships, but Reed knows having a reasonably consistent team will help the club over the next few months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt hasn\u2019t been talked about, but I guess we know that (being close to full strength is a benefit),\u201d he said. \u201cOnly missing three players, we\u2019ll be pretty handy coming into finals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked which teammate he felt was the most unlucky not to be selected for Vic Country, Reed singled out one of the Rebels\u2019 outside classy ball users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Aiden Domic<\/strong> was a bit stiff,\u201d he said. \u201cBut you don\u2019t know what the talent scouts and the blokes at Vic Country are thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for teammates he looks up to, Reed said it was hard to go past the captain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Cal Wellings<\/strong> is definitely one,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s a legend and a born leader. \u201cHe just knows what he\u2019s talking about, he really helps me in understanding my role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed is also aware of what he needs to do to improve and put his name forward to AFL scouts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(I need to) run forward and kick more goals,\u201d he said. \u201cMy role is to be that tough inside midfielder who dishes off to outside runners coming past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Much like everyone else in the TAC Cup and under 18 competitions across Australia, Reed has his eyes set on playing at the elite level, but the 18 year-old said it would be\u00a0remiss not to have alternative plans should the dream not pan out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlaying AFL would be my dream,\u201d he said. \u201cBut if not, everyone\u2019s got to have a Plan B. \u201cMaybe I might play VFL or another league. \u201cI\u2019m just going to try my best, play hard as I can and do as well as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Reed has played eight games, averaging 17 disposals (nine contested), six tackles, five clearances and three marks per game.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PLAYING his role for the team and seeing where it takes him is all Greater Western Victoria Rebels\u2019 onballer Trent Reed is concerned about this season.
