{"id":35627,"date":"2018-06-05T21:46:23","date_gmt":"2018-06-05T11:46:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.afldraftcentral.com.au\/?p=35627"},"modified":"2021-11-12T07:21:03","modified_gmt":"2021-11-11T21:21:03","slug":"three-goals-for-collingwood-inspires-daisy-bateman-to-chase-her-aflw-dream","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/central.rookieme.com\/afl\/2018\/06\/05\/three-goals-for-collingwood-inspires-daisy-bateman-to-chase-her-aflw-dream\/","title":{"rendered":"Three goals for Collingwood inspires Daisy Bateman to chase her AFLW dream"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OAKLEIGH Chargers forward, <\/span><b>Daisy Bateman <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grasped her opportunity to play in Collingwood\u2019s Victorian Football League (VFL) Women\u2019s side with both hands. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 18 year-old booted three goals in the Magpies\u2019 round four clash and got to taste her dream of playing AFLW alongside the likes of <\/span><b>Jaimee Lambert, Brittany Bonnici <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Holly Whitford. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bateman thrived on the opportunity to create expectations for herself, rather than feel pressure to perform. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s pretty good going into a VFL team where there\u2019s not much expectation of you,\u201d she said. \u201cYou come in as an 18 year-old, you\u2019re young, you\u2019ve kind of been thrown into the VFL team, and you kind of just have to make an expectation of yourself rather than living up to pressure or anything like that. I didn\u2019t really feel much pressure going into the game.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While she admits playing at an elite level was challenging, it is something she has become accustomed to. Bateman has played in the School Sport Victoria Championships, is a multiple Vic Metro representative, and is a key player for the Oakleigh Chargers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of the girls that play club footy find that transition quite hard but not playing and not having an initial thought on the game, I guess I was just kind of like \u2018oh this is what footy is\u2019 so it was alright but it was definitely challenging,\u201d Bateman said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of her football commitments, the 2018 Vic Metro representative also juggles playing basketball. Bateman has been playing basketball since she was five years old, and the sport fanatic isn\u2019t ready to give it up. She says basketball has helped her to develop her skills as a footballer. But in terms of fundamental football skills, she has the Oakleigh Chargers to thank. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy fundamentals haven\u2019t always been the best,\u201d Bateman admits. \u201cProbably my best asset is my marking probably because I play basketball, but fundamentals in terms of kicking and handballing has definitely come from Oakleigh.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of sport in general, Bateman sees it as a stress reliever. Like many TAC Cup Girls players, the 18 year-old has to somehow fit in studying for Year 12 amongst her sport commitments. Although she loves her sports, Year 12 is Bateman\u2019s main priority. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m definitely hoping to go to uni next year,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s the priority for me at this point in time. I\u2019ve just got a sport on every night which is a bit tough but I\u2019m doing alright in year 12 which is good.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After kicking 14 goals from seven games for the Chargers, Bateman has been selected to play for Vic Metro in the AFL Women\u2019s National Under 18 Championships. She admits that playing against the best footballers in the country will be a challenge, but she will draw on her own teammates for inspiration. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve got the best of the best in Vic Metro,\u201d she said. \u201cThe forward line, the midfield and the back line all have amazing players in there that have had heaps of experience like <\/span><b>Maddy Prespakis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
