THE finals are all but upon us and with most sides fielding arguably their best line-ups for the year in this week\u2019s inaugural Wildcard Round, we should be set for some absolute belters.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

CALDER CANNONS v. GEELONG FALCONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wild Card Round \u2013 Saturday, September 1, 11:30am<\/strong><\/p>\n

MARS Stadium, Ballarat<\/strong><\/p>\n

Calder take on the Falcons in the first match-up of the round, with recent additions to the Geelong line-up meaning they pose a serious threat to both the Cannons, and all finals contenders \u2013 despite finishing the regular season in a disappointing tenth.<\/p>\n

Calder have bolstered a couple of areas with\u00a0Jesse Taylor<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Jacob Martin<\/strong>\u00a0set to line up in the forward 50, while in-form versatile tall\u00a0Daniel Hanna<\/strong>\u00a0will slot straight back into the defensive six after outings with Essendon\u2019s VFL team.<\/p>\n

For Geelong, small bottom-age forward\u00a0Jay Dahlhaus<\/strong>\u00a0could be a handy inclusion, while\u00a0Finlay Parish\u00a0<\/strong>is back to provide some added depth to the midfield. Both are named on an extended bench alongside\u00a0Chas Karpala<\/strong>, with talented 16-year-old\u00a0Tanner Bruhn<\/strong>\u00a0the 23rd<\/sup>\u00a0man.<\/p>\n

The Knights and Rebels were destined to face each other in this eighth vs ninth fixture no matter the results of Round 16. Northern are in good form having knocked off top-eight competition in the last two weeks, and will be looking to gain their third win over Greater Western Victoria (GWV) for the year.<\/p>\n

They have some serious bottom-age talent to sure up each line, with\u00a0Ryan Sturgess<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Jackson Davies<\/strong>\u00a0slotting in at half-back,\u00a0Sam Philp<\/strong>\u00a0coming into the midfield and forward\u00a0James Lucente<\/strong>\u00a0named on an extended bench alongside\u00a0Charlie Simonsen<\/strong>. They lose the leadership of\u00a0Mitch Wild<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Harrison Grace<\/strong>\u00a0though, with last round\u2019s debutant\u00a0Jack House<\/strong>\u00a0also omitted.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Rebels have plenty of changes of their own, with the key one being\u00a0Scott Carlin<\/strong>\u00a0replacing\u00a0Josh Chatfield<\/strong>\u00a0in the midfield. Plenty of bottom-agers also make up their extended bench, while\u00a0Cooper Craig-Peters<\/strong>,\u00a0Riley Polkinghorne<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Izaac Grant<\/strong>\u00a0fill spots in the forward and back halves. Also keep an eye on 16-year old key forward\u00a0Jamarra Ugle-Hagan<\/strong>, who is an exciting mover.<\/p>\n

Eastern will be coming into this clash with a spring in their step, having pushed top-four side Gippsland hard in the previous round. They showed some good moments of footy and will hoping to bring that same intensity against the Jets. Still, Western have stars on every line in their side and will be hard to beat.<\/p>\n

The Jets have brought over-ager\u00a0Jack Papachatzakis<\/strong>\u00a0into the starting line-up to replace\u00a0Jaden Rice\u00a0<\/strong>in defence, while bottom-ager\u00a0Cassius White<\/strong>\u00a0has been named as their 23rd\u00a0man. The remaining ins make up an extended bench featuring\u00a0Jack Watkins<\/strong>, with depth the key to their inclusions.<\/p>\n

The final game of the round pits fifth placed Murray against bottom-placed Bendigo in an all-Country clash, with both sides coming off losses in the final round of the regular season.<\/p>\n

The Bushrangers have brought in\u00a0Floyd Bollinghaus<\/strong>\u00a0to replace ruck giant\u00a0Ben Kelly<\/strong>, while also solidifying their defence with\u00a0Rory Quinn<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Tom Boyd\u00a0<\/strong>slotting into the 22. Star forward\u00a0Zane Barzen<\/strong>\u00a0also returns, and will look to continue his dangerous partnership with\u00a0Hudson Garoni<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For Bendigo,\u00a0Connor O\u2019Shea<\/strong>\u00a0comes in on the wing, with the likes of bottom-ager\u00a0Logan Fitzgerald<\/strong>\u00a0making up an extended bench alongside\u00a0Alex Smith-Ralph<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Will Allen<\/strong>. The Pioneers have also been dealt a couple of untimely blows, with\u00a0Noah Wheeler<\/strong>\u00a0out of the side, joined by\u00a0Braydon Vaz<\/strong>. Many will be keen to see if star midfielder\u00a0Jye Caldwell<\/strong>\u00a0can impress and push for top-25 selection, having returned to competition in the last couple of weeks.<\/p>\n
