NEW Melbourne midfielder, <\/span>Tyla Hanks <\/b>has experienced it all coming into her first AFL Women\u2019s season. <\/span><\/p>\n

After enduring a winless 2017 season with the Gippsland Power, her side improved to a 3-5 season this year. <\/span>Hanks also represented Vic Country and spent some time with Carlton\u2019s Victorian Football League (VFL) Women\u2019s side, leading the way in disposals in her first match. <\/span>The 18 year-old admits she knew going to Melbourne was something that could happen, but nonetheless is thrilled to be able to pull on the Demons jumper in 2019. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t really know what was going to happen before that pick but yeah, I\u2019m really excited to be there and definitely think it\u2019s a place that\u2019s going to be really good for me,\u201d Hanks said. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hanks was one of the first names to be called out on draft day, walking up on stage as a pick six selection for the Demons. <\/span>When she realised she had got drafted, a mixture of emotions overwhelmed her. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really amazing feeling but it\u2019s pretty raw sometimes,\u201d Hanks said. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot of relief once you\u2019re up there so really looking forward to it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This milestone also brings an element of sadness though, as Hanks will leave her beloved Gippsland Power to pursue an AFL Women\u2019s career. G<\/span>ippsland experienced a nice form turnaround this year, getting a couple of wins along the way.\u00a0<\/span>Despite being busy with the Demons, the Power midfielder hopes to come back to the club and help out its next generation. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a pretty big turnaround for us but yeah I\u2019m really excited for what they can do in the coming years,\u201d Hanks said. \u201cI was really happy to be a part of that and I\u2019ll still try and keep contact with Gippsland Power and keep helping the development out there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hanks also reflects on her time at Carlton and the AFL Women\u2019s Academy, citing both as memorable and helpful experiences. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think playing against Geelong (in the VFLW) really helped me,\u201d she said. \u201cSo did the AFL Academy, I think learning about the whole environment really held us in good stead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Now a Demon, Hanks of course admires the work of <\/span>Daisy Pearce. <\/b>But she also has another player in mind that she is looking forward to playing alongside. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think <\/span>Lily Mithen<\/b>\u2019s someone that\u2019s a really good character in the group,\u201d Hanks said. \u201cEven though Daisy Pearce will be out, hopefully she\u2019ll still be around and I\u2019ll learn a little bit off her.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
