The Roos did not score in the second half after holding a seven-point lead at half-time, but were able to restrict the Red Lionesses to just one goal in the last three quarters themselves, and managed to escape with the 2.5 (17) to 2.1 (13) victory. Rachel Crack was named best on ground for her work in the green and gold, also being one of only two goalkickers alongside Queensland Under-18 representative, Chloe Gregory. Bella Smith and Ruby McDowell were also named among the best for the Roos, as they head into the forced break in a good position. For the visitors, they also had the two individual goalkickers with Megan Hunt and Grace Brennan converting majors, while Halle Pearce and Jane Childes were named their best players in the narrow defeat.

A seven goals to one second half saw Coorparoo breakaway from Aspley Hornets in the battle of two winless sides and record a healthy 56-point win at the Kings’ home ground. Having a fast start, Coorparoo booted 3.4 to 1.1 in the opening term to open up a 15-point lead, as both teams booted a goal in the second quarter and maintained a 14-point difference at the main break. A late goal in the third term would be the last remaining major for the Hornets as the Kings booted a total of seven goals to easily cruise to victory. Queensland Under-18 representative, Tahlia Hickie was named best on ground and added her name to the scoreboard, while Emma McKenzie (three goals), Charlize Anderson, Kelsey Crosbie and Whitney Howson (all two) were the multiple goalkickers in a winning side. Courtney Daniec and Kate Fraser were impressive for the Hornets and named their side’s best players in the loss.

Neck-and-neck at the final break, Coolangatta Tweed booted two last quarter goals within 66 seconds to secure a safe 19-point win over fellow undefeated side, Yeronga South Brisbane. Uma Brennan and Ahlani Eddy‘s second goals which came midway through the final term just a minute apart helped the Bluebirds secure a 7.9 (51) to 5.2 (32) win. The home team had trailed by 13 points at quarter time, but hit the front with a three goals to zero second term, and then held off a Devils resistance in the third to maintain a two-point lead at the final break. Seeming pretty even for the most part in the final term, the Bluebirds kicked away in that purple patch to ensure they were the side that remained undefeated ahead of the postponement. Gold Coast SUNS’ Georgia Breward, and Ebony Peterson were named among the best for the winners, while the Devils had a number of young talents themselves with Queensland Under-18 representatives, Zimmorlei Farquharson and Emmii-Lee Zanker-Close both in the side, as was AFL Women’s experienced Jordan Zanchetta.

—

QAFLW Development League Round 3 results:

Maroochydore 11.7 (73) defeated University of Queensland 0.1 (1)
Coorparoo 10.12 (72) defeated Aspley Hornets 1.1 (7)
Coolangatta Tweed 7.6 (48) defeated Yeronga South Brisbane 1.3 (9)
Wilston Grange vs. Bond University – postponed

Maroochydore’s ripping start to the season continued at Development League level with a thrashing 11.7 (73) to 0.1 (1) win over University of Queensland. The Roos already have a percentage of 480 and had a ton of scoring options on the day, with Jacqueline Dupuy (four goals), Zoe Smith (two) and Lily McGrath (two) the multiple goalkickers, as Taylah Whitehead was named the best for the side. Bec Barnes was deemed the Red Lionesses’ best in the 12-goal loss, while Alice Bonnett was also impressive.

In a similar scoreline, Coorparoo grabbed its first win in convincing style, running away with a 10.12 (72) to 1.1 (7) victory over fellow previously winless side, Aspley Hornets. Aside from a late goal to Aspley’s Sophie Eyres, the Kings had control of the match with best on ground Megan Evans booting a couple of goals in the win. The star of the show was Kings’ forward Sherie Sayle who snagged six majors and was among the team’s best, while Samantha Hurst was also solid in the win. Sarah Madden and Kathleen Page were deemed the Hornets’ top players.

Coolangatta Tweed leapfrogged Yeronga South Brisbane into third on the QAFLW Development League ladder with a strong 39-point win. The Bluebirds booted the first seven goals of the match from 13 scoring shots, before Alexis Hamilton got a late major for the losing side. Emily-Kate Beardsley and Clancey Sutton fought hard in a losing side, but the share of goalkickers across the board for the home side – six individuals – made it difficult to combat. Jannifer Gomes booted two goals for the Bluebirds as the only multiple goalkicker, while Neesa Doyle and Krystell Harrison were the top players on the day.

AS the impact of the coronavirus set in, one matchday – Wilstron Grange vs. Bond University – was postponed, while Coolangatta Tweed and Maroochydore remained undefeated, and Coorparoo won through for its first victory.
