NAB League Girls returned to the field over the weekend, with 12 of the 13 teams beginning their 2022 seasons. As always, Rookie Me Central<\/em> has compiled its Team of the Week, featuring 24 players – six interchange – who stood out across the round. It is always a difficult task, with the list often well beyond 30 before having to cut some incredibly unlucky players, but in the end, it has to be cut down to two-dozen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the high amount of big wins, it was always going to be tough to spread the players evenly, but three sides have recorded a trio of players. Oakleigh Chargers<\/a>, GWV Rebels<\/a> and Murray Bushrangers<\/a> all recorded an equal league-high three players for the round, with the other three victors – Dandenong Stingrays<\/a>, Eastern Ranges<\/a> and Sandringham Dragons<\/a> – as well as Round 2 losers Bendigo Pioneers<\/a> and Geelong Falcons<\/a> contributing two players apiece. Calder Cannons<\/a>, Gippsland Power<\/a> and Tasmania Devils<\/a> had the one representative each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Round 1’s Team of the Week is captained by our Player of the Week, Murray Bushrangers’ Zarlie Goldsworthy<\/a>. After 33 disposals, 10 inside 50s and 4.4, she was the standout choice, with Dandenong Stingrays’ Amber Clarke<\/a> named vice-captain after five goals herself on the weekend. They headliine a dominant forward line, which includes a couple of Oakleigh Chargers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kristen Smith<\/a> – like Goldsworthy – booted four goals on debut against the Knights, with Jasmine Fleming<\/a> racking up the most touches of any Chargers player on the day, rotating between midfield and forward. Up the opposite end, Rylie Wilcox<\/a> was outstanding in getting the ball inside 50. Rounding out the starting six is a much needed tall inside 50 in Bendigo Pioneers’ Tegan Williams<\/a> who took five marks and slotted a lovely goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defence was particularly diffcult to select this week with a number of players deserving of the honour. In the end, a couple of Geelong Falcons hold down the fort deep, with potential father-daughter selection Mackenzie McGrath<\/a> next to teammate and debutant, Johanna Sunderland<\/a>. In the other back pocket is Dandenong’s Mikayla Williamson<\/a> who made life difficult for the Falcons with her run and carry out of defence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the half-back line, Sandringham Dragons defender Georgia Foran<\/a> was named at centre half-back after 16 disposals and 11 rebounds, keeping the Tasmania Devils at bay. Flanking her either side are a couple of runners in the talented Mia Busch<\/a> (Eastern Ranges) and Cassidy Mailer<\/a> (Murray Bushrangers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also providing run in this week’s team are the wingers in Bushrangers’ tall Zara Hamilton<\/a> and GWV Rebels’ small Tahlia Meier<\/a>. The other Rebels representative on-field is ruck Kalani Scoullar<\/a>, with an on-ball brigade of the contested beast Bridget Deed<\/a> (Eastern), the versatile Charlotte Taylor<\/a> (Oakleigh) and silky Sofia Hurley<\/a> (Sandringham).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking to the bench, and six different teams feature, including the teams with a sole representative. These are Gippsland Power’s Ash Centra<\/a>, Calder Cannons’ Mali McLeod<\/a> and Tasmania Devils’ Claire Ransom<\/a>. Providing depth across the midfield and attack are GWV Rebels’ Ruby Stephens<\/a>, Bendigo Pioneers’ Lucia Painter<\/a> and Northern Knights’ Ava Jordan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naturally like any team, three emergencies were named after being considered the most unlucky to miss out. These were GWV Rebels defender Jamie-Lee Speakman<\/a> (eight disposals, five rebounds), Murray Bushrangers small forward India Lehman<\/a> (eight disposals, four goals) and Olivia Robinson<\/a> (12 disposals, five tackles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
