2025 NBA Draft Team Preview – Brooklyn Nets

ANOTHER year has passed in the rebuild of the Brooklyn Nets, but the team has secured another top-10 selection at the 2025 NBA Draft, and in such a strong class, will undoubtedly add a key piece for the future.

Injuries plagued the likes of Cam Thomas and Cameron Johnson throughout the 2024/25 season, and off-season recruit D’Angelo Russell missed over 20 games as well, so a lot of the team’s core spent hefty stints on the sidelines.

There is no denying the Nets are in a rebuilding phase, with Thomas in particular set to play a key role in the future, although rumours have been consistently swirling around Brooklyn looking to accelerate the development of its roster and bring in a superstar.

However, if the Nets opt to head to the draft, they will have the opportunity to snag some serious talent, and with two selections inside the top 19 picks and four in the first round, will be one of the most active teams in the first round on night one.

Draft Selections

8, 19, 26, 27, 36

Contracted Players

Nic Claxton, Cameron Johnson, Noah Clowney (team option), Dariq Whitehead (team option), Keon Johnson (non-guaranteed), Jalen Wilson (team option), Maxwell Lewis (non-guaranteed), Tyrese Martin (team option), Drew Timme (team option)

The Nets have one of the strongest hands at the NBA draft, and will be extremely active on the first night of selections with four picks and plenty of talent to choose from. With a lot of their 2024/25 roster out of contract, it opens up spots for rookies to join the team on smaller contracts if the Nets look to free agency for a big fish.

Although they have the chance to package these picks together and either trade for a player and move up the draft order, a deep draft class means there will be plenty of elite talent right through both rounds, and if their selections are nailed, could provide the framework for the future.

If they remain with the eighth pick, the Nets could be intrigued by Duke’s Kon Knueppel, who has emerged as a top-10 pick with elite shooting and playmaking upside. A serious contributor on the offensive front, Knueppel is adaptable to most lineups, giving Brooklyn flexibility in building its roster moving forward.

With their second pick, the Nets could look to add to their backcourt stocks, with Nolan Traore proving a potential option. A point guard who loves to break away with speed and attack the rim going downhill, he could prove a valuable protege to Russell as the latter begins to wind down his career, and his veteran presence could accelerate Traore’s development.

Although it seems likely the Nets do not keep all of their selections, if they are still on the board with back to back selections later in the first round, big man Danny Wolf may be a viable option, with big men starting to come back in vogue of late. Although it is more of a question of risk vs. reward with Wolf given how much flash he brings coupled with some errors in decision-making and shooting, he is still worth a punt late in the first round.

If still on the board, Walter Clayton Jr. could be ideal if the Nets need a guard who can impact now. Having boosted his draft stock majorly in the past few months with a memorable March Madness run, the 23-year-old would be able to carry a significant offensive load if the Nets need some instant offence out of their draft hand.
