NBL1 East announce teams for the upcoming season

IN some exciting news for basketball fans, the National Basketball League (NBL)1 have made massive steps in expanding their brand, by announcing the teams for their upcoming inaugural season for their East competition. Set to take place in New South Wales, the newest NBL1 league in Australia will host 12 teams, with the competition slated to replace the Waratah 1 competition.

The following teams will be competing in the debut NBL1 East season;

Albury Wodonga Bandits

Bankstown Bruins

Canberra Gunners/ Nationals

Central Coast Crusaders

Hills Hornets

Illawarra Hawks

Inner West Bulls

Maitland Mustangs

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles

Newcastle Basketball

Norths Bears

Sutherland Sharks

The Bandits were one of the foundation sides in NBL1 South, but will be making the switch to the Eastern league following a successful stint, which makes their travelling situation much easier. There will be three reigning premiers joining the league from the Waratah 1 league. The Sea Eagles enter as the men’s champions, while Sutherland and Newcastle hold the title of champions, with both awarded premiers following the season cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

NBL1 General Manager Dean Anglin expressed his excitement around expanding the league on a national scale.

“We are excited to have locked in the 12 participating clubs for NBL1 East.

“These clubs all have a unique history, great stories to tell and an elite level of basketball to display. We look forward to showcasing that as we live stream all games on either the NBL1 digital platforms or Kayo Freebies

“We look forward to working with Basketball NSW and all the clubs on delivering an outstanding league for the clubs, players, officials and fans.”

The NBL1 East competition joins NBL1 North, NBL1 South, NBL1 West and NBL1 Central, with Australia’s Basketball system, as big as ever.

Basketball NSW CEO Maria Nordstrom said the introduction of the league is important for the development of basketball in NSW and Australia.

“We have 12 associations who are joining NBL1 East in its inaugural season, which is very pleasing.

“We are looking forward to working with the associations on taking basketball in NSW to a new level as we launch NBL1 East.

“We are hopeful other associations will want to join the league as it grows in the next few years.

“Our aim is to work with the NBL and the associations to improve the league year on year and believe this will provide another growth platform for basketball in NSW.”

The NBL1 East competition is expected to kick off proceedings sometime in 2022, with a fixture yet to be announced.
