Melbourne Boomers vs UC Capitals
Saturday January 8
Gippsland Indoor Sports Stadium
This round 6 clash will see the third and fourth best sides of the 2020 season face off, in a battle that should accurately measure how the sides compare to last season. Both teams were unable to make it to the big dance from the bottom half of the finals standings, and will be keen to take their games to the next level. This matchup will be a good test to see who has improved on their early exit last year.
The Boomers have added WNBA talent Tiffany Mitchell to their list, so by the time this match rolls around, she should be fully settled in to her team and the league. Their opponents will also have a fresh face on their squad, swapping Froling sisters with the addition of Alicia, so both sides will have a slightly different look from the last time they faced off in 2020.
Southside Flyers vs Townsville Fire
Thursday December 23
Dandenong Basketball Stadium
Our final match on this list will see a grand final rematch, with the Flyers emerging victorious following an absolutely dominant regular season and finals series. This should light a fire in the belly of the Townsville Fire, who will be eager to grab their share of revenge following a disappointing finish to their season. These rematches always draw a big crowd, so expect there to plenty of fans in the stands of the Dandenong Basketball Stadium, with the Flyers holding the hosting rights for this clash.
The Fire have boosted their roster ahead of this match, with the acquisition of Lauren Nicholson set to shake things up from a defensive point of view for the Flyers. Nicholson delivered a terrific season, with many considering her unlucky not to win the league’s MVP award, and will likely make things a lot trickier for the opponents of the Fire. The Flyers have made impressive signings of their own, with one in particular heating up the rivalry between these two sides. Center Abby Bishop made the to the Flyers from Townsville, and will likely prove vital in the Flyers defeating her old side, and should add even more spice to this matchup.
