WYNDHAM has made it two from two in the Big V Championship competitions, with the women’s win on the weekend now matched by a convincing triumph from its men’s side against the Sunbury Jets at Eagle Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Jets have been the best side in the competition for the entirety of the 2022 season, and came into game one of the grand final series as the favourites over Wyndham, but it was the latter that managed to get the job done and take a 1-0 lead.

It was the efforts of star duo Manel Ayol and Maurice Howard that sparked the dominant offensive showing from Wyndham, who delivered one of their best performances of the year from a team perspective. Ayol proved to be effective once again, continuing his hot run of form with a 20-point showing to go with seven rebounds and three dimes. His efforts were only topped by those of Howard, who led from the front with 23 points, four boards, six dimes and three steals, while Aaron Dolny impressed with 21 points off the bench.

Despite a disappointing effort from a team perspective, Gerald Blackshear was the star of the show for the Jets, proving to be a shining light as Wyndham jumped out to an early advantage on the scoreboard. He fought hard all game and combined well with his team’s guards in the pick and roll, which often resulted in Blackshear throwing down the dunk. There were not many more damaging inside the paint than the Sunbury big man, as he finished with a game-high 23 points to go with five rebounds. He was one of two Sunbury players to register double-digits in the points column, with the other being Maxwell Barkeley, who made his way to the free throw line quite a bit to finish with 11 points.

The result was foreshadowed early in the opening term, where Wyndham grabbed control with a terrific two-way showing which saw them take a 26-14 lead into the first change. That trend continued as the home side stretched its lead out thanks to a dominant offensive performance in the second term. They were firing on all cylinders, and although the Jets lifted their output with ball in hand, the pure scoring power of Wyndham was proving too much. A whopping 38-point margin culminated from this, and the Jets will need to lift ahead of game two on Saturday night.
