SNAPSHOT
An Aussie forward who can do it all and shows plenty of hustle and effort whenever he is on the floor, Alex Toohey has stormed into second-round contention after a strong season playing professionally in his home country.
Playing in his second season with the Sydney Kings in the NBL against fully developed athletes, Toohey impressed enough to put his name on the radar of NBA sides, and although his shooting could do with some work, there is no doubt he has the tools to be a solid role player at the top level.
DRAFT PROFILE
Born in the nation's capital of Canberra, Toohey was a multi-sport athlete for much of his youth, splitting his time between cricket and basketball, before settling on the latter after receiving a call-up to represent his country at the Under-15 Oceania Games.
The forward was selected to join the NBA Academy in his home town as a part of the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence, and was a particular standout at the 2022 NBA Academy Games, where he was the best performer on a stacked team.
Toohey then joined the Sydney Kings in Australia's professional basketball competition, and showed a bit in his first campaign before breaking out in his second season with the team. Toohey locked in a starting spot with the team and was one of the best youngsters in the competition, winning the Next Generation Award as a result.
Throughout the 2024/25 season, he posted numbers of 10.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.8 blocks per game, while shooting 45.2 per cent from the field and 72.9 per cent from the charity stripe in a strong campaign.

+ Defence
IMPROVEMENTS
- Shooting
- Speed
Toohey brings versatility on both ends of the floor, showing an immense ability to contribute at multiple positions and do whatever the team requires. He filled gaps perfectly for the Kings during his second campaign, and that will be a big positive for NBA sides.
As a forward, Toohey brings excellent playmaking skills to the table, and can certainly prove a secondary ball-handler and passer for teams at NBA level. He has a great IQ with ball in hand and is selfless with his passing, often looking to put his teammates in strong spots rather than scoring himself.
Throughout his tenure in the NBL, Toohey showed an excellent ability to finish inside the paint, and often kept his shot going through contact. This generated plenty of and-one opportunities and he has the ability to punish the opposition if he has a height advantage.
Toohey's shooting has been strong at times throughout his career, but lacks the consistency to truly be a weapon at this stage. If he can continue to develop this side of his game, it will make him a much better contributor on the offensive end.
DRAFT PROJECTION: Second round
Toohey has enough weapons at his disposal to become a solid role player at NBA level, and if he can continue to make his presence felt from behind the arc as a shooter, he could become an even better player given he already has the tools in other parts of his game.
