Tiger bench roars as LSU claims title

THE LSU Tigers are the 2023 NCAAW National Tournament winners.

The Tigers delivered a stirring performance in the biggest game of the season, outclassing the Hawkeyes to claim a 102-85 triumph at American Airlines Arena on Monday.

It caps off a dominant campaign for LSU, who hold a record of 34 wins and two losses after the victory over the Hawkeyes. The Tigers proved far too much for all of their opponents in the National Tournament, and although Iowa had been on a strong run itself, it was convincingly defeated by a red-hot LSU.

It was the Tigers’ first Women’s Championship in the school’s history, and the championship game was a perfect reflection of the team’s dominance in the 2023 season.

LSU’s 102 points against the Hawkeyes is the highest recorded total in a women’s championship game, and the Tigers’ sixth 100+ point performance of the season, a perfect way to cap off the campaign for the competition’s best scoring side.

The win was spurred by a remarkable performance from LSU’s bench, who responded after a disappointing outing in the semi-finals.

After the Tigers found themselves in foul trouble, some of the reserves found themselves inserted into the match slightly earlier than everyone expected. However, they took full advantage of the increase in opportunity, and outscored Iowa’s 30-8, and ended up being one of the defining factors of the match.

The Tigers got off to a strong start, taking a slim, but crucial lead in the first term. Although it was a promising beginning from an LSU perspective, the second quarter was where everything changed. The Tigers stormed away thanks to a dominant period where they outscored the Hawkeyes 32-20 and had full control of the contest at the main change.

Although Iowa lifted after halftime, LSU never looked in any real danger of surrendering the lead. The Tigers cruised home to a 17-point triumph and got their hands on the highly sought trophy.

For the Tigers, Jasmine Carson was the one that sparked the team in the first half, registering 21 points in the first half on a perfect 5/5 shooting from three-point territory and 7/7 shooting from the field. She was a star off the bench and single-handedly drove LSU’s offence. Angel Reese was also as impactful as ever, finishing the match with a statline of 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark fought bravely despite the result, and capped off a magnificent campaign with 30 points and eight assists.
