Summer League Stars – Keyonte George

THE NBA Summer League has wrapped for 2023, and there were plenty of exciting performances from some of the competition’s most recent draftees.

The Summer League is a pre-season tournament in the NBA that provides an opportunity for the best and brightest in the league to showcase their talents, while also giving undrafted prospects a chance to earn a spot on a team’s roster.

This year, the tournament took place in Las Vegas over the past couple of weeks, with the Cleveland Cavaliers taking it all out after an undefeated campaign.

With that in mind, Rookie Me Central will be taking a look at some of the players that delivered standout performances just a few months out from the start of the regular season.

Next up on the agenda is Utah Jazz guard Keyonte George.

One of the biggest talking points to come out of the 2023 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas was the performance of George, who made a name for himself with some exceptional numbers during the tournament.

He was selected with the 16th pick by the Jazz, and shapes as a long-term backcourt option for the team, but accelerated this idea with a strong showing during his first batch of games in a Jazz uniform. George exploded onto the scene with consistently strong offensive performances for Utah, leading the team’s offence tremendously and looking like a potential star of the future.

George’s biggest weapon is his confidence, not shying away from any scoring opportunity and although his efficiency was not exactly lighting the world on fire, his willingness to overcome any shooting slumps ensured he still had a big impact on the game.

The opportunity provided in the Summer League allowed George to initiate the offence, and stake his claim as a point guard moving forward, despite largely being described as a combo guard.

He is one of the most talented shotmakers in the entire draft classes, and showed glimpses of scoring across all three levels.

Perhaps where his game was most noteworthy was within his playmaking. George took the next step as a passer, and averaged eight assists per game, getting his teammates involved in the process. It was a perfect audition as he works towards the team’s starting point guard position.

Jordan Clarkson is 31, while Colin Sexton has not proven himself as a cemented starter yet, so its certainly up for grabs and George made things even more interesting.

The Summer League was the perfect platform for George to showcase his game and potential qualities he can bring to the team, further adding to his value despite being a month into his NBA career.
