Aussies in Arizona continues as Dell’Orso commits to Wildcats
AUSTRALIAN basketball prospects are continuing to make waves in the college basketball scene, with Anthony Dell’Orso set to join the Arizona Wildcats next NCAAM season.
After joining the transfer portal following a stint with Campbell, Dell’Orso has committed to the Wildcats, an organisation that has hosted plenty of Australian talent in the past.
He is coming off an impressive season at NCAAM level, posting 20.2 points per game while shooting 39 per cent from behind the arc in an excellent display to scouts of his capabilities as a genuine offensive threat.
Dell’Orso was second-team All-Conference for his efforts, and was one of the best performers for the Fighting Camels last season. However, he chose to explore his options and test the waters for the NBA Draft, despite not being ranked in the top 100 prospects.
At six-foot-six, he may be considered undersized as a forward, but his smooth shooting motion makes up for his lack of size at the three. He can be an excellent contributor off the ball, working hard around the perimeter to get open and often finding the bottom of the net in catch-and-shoot situations, where he does his best work.
One of Dell’Orso’s other strengths is his ability to draw contact, often catching the defence with a pump-fake and driving to the rim with intent. Given the defence is on the back foot, it frequently results in some undisciplined defence. From the line, the forward shot 80 per cent last year, which will also be a positive to the Wildcats.
Per 40 minutes, he drew 5.1 fouls per game, showing how efficient he is at conjuring offence, despite playing against lower competition.
Given Arizona’s roster is far from set, and several players are still considering their futures with the team, the Aussie could find himself in a starting role given his experience with Campbell. It would be a massive boost to his NBA Draft hopes if he could perform well on a high profile team as a starter.
The Melbourne native has improved consistently since joining the college basketball system in 2022, and could deliver a breakout season for Arizona if given the right opportunity.
