SOME OF Victoria’s premier young basketballers will be hitting the court once again in 2025, with the Big V Youth Men’s competition starting again this weekend.
The 2024 was certainly full of thrilling encounter, and the 2025 fixture is shaping with a similar theme, with plenty of sides likely to be around the mark come August.
The last time Big V sides hit the floor in the Youth Men’s Championship was in the 2024 Grand Final in August of last year. The two best sides remained after months of play as the Kilsyth Cobras faced off in the decider against the Sandringham Sabres, with plenty of star power on both teams.
Ultimately, the Sabres were too good for the Cobras when it mattered most, claiming a 17point win to deservingly take out the 2024 title. It was a win built on the back of a starring performance from Joel Foxwell, who posted 27 points, five rebounds and six assists, putting Sandringham on his back as he had done all season.
Foxwell will not be returning to the Sabres for the the Youth Men’s Championship, but one boost for the Sabres will be the return of big man Joe Lubarksy, who put in a strong showing himself in the decider. Lubarsky posted a double-double of 10 points (5/8 FG) and 13 rebounds, and despite the loss of Foxwell, should ensure the Sabres will be in contention once again.
Although many of the top performers have moved up in age group to the Big V Men’s, Eltham star Zahn Agosta will be returning and should be among the top offensive players this season again. Agosta averaged an impressive 21.4 points per game, the third most of any player in the competition, and is one for opposition teams to be mindful of throughout the 2025 fixture.
Agosta will be joined by running mate Zac Anderson, who was the sharpshooter of the competition and led the way with 69 made triples last season. His total was 13 more than the next best, and his ability to hit shots from range makes Eltham a dangerous offensive unit.
The season kicks off this weekend, with 10 games set to take place over Saturday and Sunday in a bumper start to the fixture. It all kicks off on Saturday night as the Sabres head to Keilor to take on the Thunder in what should be an entertaining matchup to start the season.
