Aussie Amoore bound for Mystics after WNBA Draft
BALLARAT native Georgia Amoore is the latest Australian to make it to the top level, being selected by the Washington Mystics at the 2025 Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) Draft earlier today.
Amoore was picked with the sixth overall pick in the draft, making her the highest Australian selection at the WNBA Draft since Liz Cambage back in 2011, having caught the eye of selectors with a tremendous season with the Kentucky Wildcats.
Despite being undersized at five-foot-six, Amoore possesses all the necessary traits to make it as an elite point guard, bringing excellent basketball IQ, tremendous playmaking and a stepback shot that finds the bottom of the net consistently.
She transferred to the Wildcats from Virginia Tech at the start of the 2024/25 season, and it was an inspired move, with the point guard averaging 19.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game this season, while shooting at 42.5 per cent from the field, and had several standout scoring performances, including a season-high 34 points.
She was the only Australian to be selected in the draft, but will be certainly one to watch, with the Mystics now getting the point guard they desperately needed, meaning Amoore should get plenty of playing time early on.
She will have one familiar face to see when she lands in Washington, with Amoore joining Jade Melbourne at the Mystics. The pair are two of the most exciting young talents to come out of Australia, making the Mystics one of the teams to watch for Aussie fans.
Elsewhere, the Dallas Wings selected Paige Bueckers with the first overall pick in a surprise to few, with Bueckers one of the most well-rounded prospects in recent memory. The combo guard is a pure three-level scorer, and should accelerate Dallas’ rebuild with her offensive production and efficiency.
Next up were the Seattle Storm, who selected French phenom Dominique Malonga, who may take some time, but the six-foot-six smooth mover has immense potential, and could develop into one of the most skilled players in the WNBA.
Rounding out the top three were the Mystics, who selected two-way shooting guard Sonia Citron, who will slot into the team nicely with her ability to shoot the ball, pass and stop the opposition’s best player down the other end.
