ALTHOUGH largely known for his high-flying antics in the NBA Slam Dunk Competition, Mac McClung has been performing exceptionally well for the Osceola Magic in the NBA G League, and delivered another standout season.
After playing for the South Bay Lakers and earning G League Rookie of the Year honours in 2022, he has since moved to the Magic, and become the number one scoring option for the team since 2023, proving masterful in orchestrating the team’s offence.
He is highly regarded as a high-flyer, but there is much more to his game than that, with the point guard showing the ability to score across all three levels and exploding for some big scoring performances throughout the 2024/25 fixture.
On the season, he averaged 25.7 points per game, identical to his figures from last season, although he did improve his efficiency to shoot 51.1 per cent from the field. His ability to score as well as last year is impressive considering he played three less minutes a game during this campaign.
Most importantly, he led the Magic to a winning season, with Osceola finishing with a record of 22 wins and 12 losses, good enough to end the regular season atop the standings in the Eastern Conference with McClung leading the way.
In the postseason, McClung set the tone early by breaking the Magic record for points in a single postseason game with 39 points in a win over the Indiana Mad Ants to kickstart Osceola’s postseason in style. The guard shot 12/21 from the field and 6/12 from behind the arc in a starring performance, showcasing a tremendous ceiling as well as an ability to perform in big games.
He backed it up by breaking his own record a few days later, leading the Magic past the Maine Celtics to punch their ticket to the G League finals. Coming up against league MVP JD Davison, McClung dropped 42 points on 16/26 shooting to show why he is one of the best offensive players in the competition.
Although heavily guarded in the G League Finals by the Stockton Kings (who had clearly done their homework), he still managed to post 29 points in the game one win, 34 points in a tough game two loss, and some important baskets in game three, despite just 11 points for the match.
A championship capped off a tremendous campaign from McClung, who was the Magic’s go-to guy for the entirety of the fixture. At just 26 years of age, there is certainly plenty of basketball ahead of the guard, and if he keeps up performances of this calibre, NBA teams may just come knocking.
