2025 NBA Draft Team Wrap – Detroit Pistons

IT WAS one and done for the Detroit Pistons at the 2025 NBA Draft in Chicago last week, making just the sole selection of Chaz Lanier over the two nights of proceedings in a pick that ensures they still have quality young talent coming through.

The Pistons made the leap into contention last season when their young core truly came on, rallying behind the play of Cade Cunningham, who swiftly put himself in the conversation of being a top-five point guard in the NBA as it stands.

However, in order to build their currently strong roster, the Pistons had to trade away their first round selection, so it meant they had just the one pick at the 2025 intake in the second round, but did make the most of it by adding an exciting young piece in Lanier.

The Pistons certainly needed to make the most of their selection at the 2025 NBA Draft, and made an exciting selection when they added Lanier with the seventh pick of the second round of proceedings last week.

The Pistons have solid pieces in most positions, but added another strong player to their wing stocks with the addition of Lanier. His preferred position is at the shooting guard position, and has an immense ability to hit the scoreboard when he is in form.

Lanier’s biggest strength is his perimeter shooting, with his ability to knock down shots from long range a massive weapon in his arsenal. One of the better three-point shooters in the draft class, he made a name for himself as a player who could light up a match from behind the arc.

He also does not need too much of the ball to make an impact, meaning he will pair nicely next to Cunningham in the future given how high-usage the point guard can be. Lanier will likely get some excellent looks as a result and can become a big weapon for the Pistons in the future.

Admittedly, he could stand to improve his defence to avoid being targeted by opposition teams, but that will come in the future and he will have plenty of experienced teammates to help develop that craft in the coming years.

Although they had just the one selection, the Pistons certainly made a smart choice by adding Lanier with the 37th pick, adding to their perimeter shooting and getting a guy who can hit the scoreboard without needing too much of the ball.
